1047 Games ends splitgate development and focuses on new titles in the same universe

1047 Games is ending feature development for Splitgate to focus on a new game set in the same universe, the American game studio announced on Friday.

Game support for Splitgate will continue in the form of minor updates and fixes. The servers and in-game store of the free-to-play multiplayer FPS will also remain online, as will the players’ existing items, progression, and splitcoin. As a thank you to its community, 1047 Games is releasing a new Battle Pass for free on September 15th.

“After careful consideration and much deliberation,” the 1047 announcement reads, “the team at 1047 Games has decided that the fans deserve to build the game – and to build it in a way that doesn’t attempt to alter an existing one.” to upgrade and run live Product — We are completing the feature development of Splitgate.

“Shifting our attention away from iterative, minor updates, we are fully focused on a new game in the Splitgate universe that will make revolutionary, non-evolutionary changes to our game. It will be a shooter, it will have portals and it will be built in Unreal Engine 5. Oh, and it will be free.”

No further details were shared regarding the upcoming game, as 1047 mentioned elsewhere that players would not hear more about it “for a while”.

This is a bit of a surprise considering the game recently entered its second season, but not that hard to believe given its unorthodox release history.

Splitgate was originally released in Early Access for PC (via Steam) for free in May 2019. After gaining momentum in the summer of 2021, the game’s beta was released in July.

Around the same time, Splitgate expanded its platforms to Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, with cross-play capability available across all platforms.

Since then, however, the Splitgate beta has been extended indefinitely, a decision originally made so the team could be “prepared for massive scale” when it officially launches.

Ultimately, this move seems to have been taken to really give 1047 Games and the Splitgate universe a real fresh start, to welcome both new and old fans.

“We think we have something special,” says the 1047 FAQ blog. “We know from our community that they believe in Splitgate. But we are faced with a reality that we are trying to update, update and build for the future at the same time. The best thing for the active community is to give them more people to play and a game that we believe is fully worthy of their fan base – every map, every skin, every moment of gameplay.”
