It seems weird, doesn’t it? Claiming that FSG have been bad owners for Liverpool FC. They’ve transformed a team winding down that was averaging a top 6 place in the Premier League but no more into a perennial title challenger. In any other generation, Liverpool would have been the runaway leader and been talked about as the greatest premier league team ever. However, Manchester City stood in their way. Twice Liverpool lost out on the PL title despite being in the lead on the final day. City were just too good, and it seems weird to say it, but Liverpool were not good enough. Don’t forget the Champions League title that Klopp’s men added to the trophy cabinet, and the other two Champions League finals to add to that! So why do people say that FSG is holding Liverpool back? Let’s take a look at what they have and haven’t done.
Saved the club from oblivion
George Gillette and Tom Hicks were taking the club down. We all know it. Everybody was saying that Liverpool were too big to fail, but the evidence was there! FSG and John Henry came in and said enough is enough. They backed Brendan Rodgers, and in one season it looked like it had finally clicked. Liverpool finished in 2nd and it was only the infamous Steven Gerrard slip which left them at the end of the season not holding the Premier League trophy in celebration.
Redeveloped the ground
That team that contained Sterling, Suarez and Sturridge was great to watch and Liverpool FC were back. But then for a while, it stagnated again. Did the board back Brendan enough? Or was it solely down to Rodgers’ management that the next season was nothing short of a disaster? Some fans will aim their ire at the manager, but others point towards what was a perceived lack of investment. The sponsors were the same, and the players were the same. Everything about The Reds seemed to just be going stale. However, FSG did have their eye on growing Liverpool. They redeveloped the famous Anfield ground, mainly the main stand as they grew the capacity and made it an even more attractive club to play at.
Got a big name as manager
Following Brendan’s Champions League season and then his stuttering start to the next season, FSG knew the fans were not happy. The change was needed and FSG wasted no expense in attracting the huge personality that is Jurgen Klopp to the club. It is safe to say the rest was history. Despite a standard first season, which was always expected, Klopp propelled Liverpool into the elite. Backed by FSG, money was spent on players like Alisson, van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. Compared to others, Mane and Salah did not command huge fees, but the cash was still spent. It is safe to say that the future looked incredibly bright for Klopp and Liverpool.
Stood still as a club
However, whilst the results were there, the trophies didn’t really arrive. It sounds silly to say considering Liverpool broke Manchester City’s monopoly on the domestic cups, but Liverpool fans will always crave winning the Premier League over anything else. And the view of the fans is that FSG just hasn’t done enough. The overriding feeling is that the owners got lucky with Klopp. All of a sudden Liverpool were able to attract bigger names for Klopp’s project. He had shown at Dortmund what he could do for players and how good he could make his teams. They had the buy-in of the fans as well. Anfield was behind them and everyone was stepping up their game. But in all honestly, the process was the same under Rodgers as it is with Klopp. And that is why some Liverpool fans are still not happy with FSG. A quick survey would probably see that most fans feel that under another manager, FSG would have been found out and the club would be stagnating.
So are FSG bad owners? Has Klopp saved them? Or are we, as fans, just too expectant? It is still a sell-to-buy policy despite being Premier League winners and Champions League winners in the last three years.
Will the sale change things?
In football, there are no guarantees. And the rumours have seriously ramped up in recent weeks that FSG may be selling up. Could that change the landscape for Liverpool FC? One thing we can say is that they have brought us some great moments. Yes, they could have done more, but they also could have done a lot worse.
Will they now sign players after the failed experiment in the Summer of Arthur Melo? That is where Liverpool fans are really annoyed. It is clear that the midfield has needed to be upgraded but no one has done anything about it. The recruitment guru has packed it in and moved on. The players look to have lost a little desire and belief. So where do we go from here? Will the American investment that is likely to come in catapult Liverpool to the top? Or will they use it as a way to make money? We shall see.
Have a gamble on Liverpool’s next manager
Rumours are also swirling that Jurgen Klopp may have had enough. The players don’t always seem to be listening to him anymore. Whilst it does look a long way away, could Klopp do the unthinkable and leave Anfield? If he does, who would be best suited to lead the club? The odds would be quite interesting to look at. Just like they are for the upcoming season and whether Liverpool can still make it to the Champions League this year.
