The students and staff of Holbrook Indian School were all en route to Window Rock, the capital of the Navajo Nation,

There had been a rollover earlier in the day and traffic on the freeway had slowed that morning, DPS officials said.

“This is a very sad day for the Holbrook Indian School community,” the school said in a statement.

“Our concerns now go to our parents and families as we support them and mourn with them. We ask that you be patient and respectful as we work through this as a school community and we seek your prayers on behalf of all affected by this tragedy.

Gordon’s aunt Falonna Ashley said her niece, who came from a small community in the Navajo Nation called Wide Ruins, loved animals and played volleyball. The teenager celebrated his birthday just last month.

“She had a beautiful soul,” Ashley said.
