  • He was taken to a local hospital in serious but stable condition
  • The car wash was forced to close for two days before reopening on Thursday

A 77-year-old man had to be rescued after being trapped in a wrecked car at a Pennsylvania car wash for 90 minutes after his car overturned in a shocking accident.

The man, who has not been identified, was at the Wave Car Wash in Colmar, Pennsylvania — about 35 miles north of Philadelphia — as of Tuesday afternoon.

He can be seen on video paying for his laundry, but as he walks inside, he accidentally puts his foot on the gas.

The vehicle then crashed into a cleaning device and rolled over completely.

The fire brigade was called to the car wash at around 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday to free the trapped man.

Rescue workers discovered the 77-year-old driver had his leg trapped between the car and the driver’s door.

Fire Marshal Mikele Waldron said it was likely his leg was outside the car and the door was open when he hit the accelerator.

It took crews about 90 minutes to pull the man out using airbags, blocks and jacks to slowly lift the car out of the car wash.

The victim was taken to a local hospital for injuries to his leg, but ABC6 reported he was expected to survive. Authorities described his condition as “serious but stable”.

Wave Car Wash was forced to temporarily close following Tuesday’s accident, and said in a statement on Facebook that “several pieces of equipment” were destroyed in the crash.

They weren’t able to reopen until Thursday, when they wrote: “A big thank you to the Wave team and car wash family for helping us reopen so quickly.

Kapanjie also said that “we will get through it together and end up on top”.

Bill Ashmead, who stood behind the victim in line at the car wash waiting to let his vehicle through, was stunned.

“I can’t even imagine a car tipping over in a car wash,” he said. “I don’t think that’s ever happened before.”
