A birthday party on a harbor cruise ended in disaster after the boat crashed into a buoy, throwing passengers overboard.

Dozens of partygoers were knocked off their feet after their charter boat crashed about 2km offshore in Fremantle harbor on Saturday, as temperatures reached a sweltering 39C in Perth.

The remaining passengers on board had to climb to the rear of the ship as the boat began to take on water.

Water Police were called to the scene to rescue passengers who had fallen overboard and escorted the badly damaged boat safely back to Fremantle Boat Harbour.

Crime scene photos show extensive damage to the front of the charter boat, including the ruptured hull.

A man believed the boat’s skipper saw the funny side of the ordeal and saw him drop his pants to report to moon watchers and media teams covering the scene, Perth Now reported.

No major injuries were reported.

Around 30 passengers celebrated their 26th birthday on the charter ship.

A passenger who recalled the ordeal said they all initially thought it was a joke.

“Out of nowhere, there was a massive jolt. We just kept floating and the next minute we just stopped and everyone just fell down,” Mikayla Brown told Nine News.

“It was pretty hectic.”

Western Australia Police have questioned the boatman and are launching an investigation into the incident.

Police later denied reports of passengers being thrown overboard in the impact.

“No reports of injuries or crashes or people thrown overboard,” a spokesman said.

“This is now a matter for the Department for Transport and the Australian Maritime and Safety Agency.
