A dog stolen by Russian soldiers and given to Chechen leader Kadyrov as a “trophy” has finally been freed and returned to a Ukrainian soldier as part of a New Year’s prisoner exchange.

American pit bull terrier Adik was taken from a Ukrainian soldier in June and reportedly given as a “trophy” to Chechnya’s leader Ramzan Kadyrov.

But Adik has now returned to Ukraine as part of a New Year’s prisoner exchange that freed 140 Ukrainian soldiers from Russia.

Adik was captured at the Azovstal Iron and Steel Works along with his owner and the Mariupol defenders.

It was handed over to the special services before volunteer Yuriy Kovanov gave it to Kadyrov, who renamed it Adidas.

In return, the Ukrainian President’s chief of staff Andriy Yermak said Russia had handed over 140 Ukrainian soldiers.

Some of the freed Ukrainian soldiers – 132 men and eight women – had fought in defense of the Black Sea port city of Mariupol and on Snake Island, according to Telegram channel Yermak. Many of them had been wounded in the conflict.

The two sides have exchanged hundreds of captured soldiers in multiple rounds of prisoner swaps over the past few months, despite a complete breakdown in broader diplomatic talks between Moscow and Kyiv.

Ukrainian military personnel, wrapped in their military fatigues, poured out of a line of buses at an undisclosed location on Saturday.

The soldiers shouted: ‘Honour to Ukraine!’ As they got off the buses and headed for freedom, many of them raised their hands in celebration.

Smiles spread across their faces as they met loved ones and Ukrainian officials who provided them with white tote bags that appeared to contain important supplies and documents.

They then lined up to pose for a photo with a row of Ukrainian flags. Again they shouted “Glory to Ukraine!”, applauded and cheered each other.
