Antony has been a leading target for United throughout the transfer window, making clear his desire to move to Old Trafford.

Ajax stood firm as United interest grew but the 22-year-old then refused to train when he tried to push through a move.

He was left out of the Dutch side’s last two league games after declaring that he had no intention of playing for the club again.

When asked if Antony could be fined, Schreuder added: “Absolutely. I don’t think it’s good that this is possible within our club.

“When you’re Ajax, it’s just bad that this is happening. I spoke to him about it. If you’re disappointed for a day or two, I understand that, but eventually you’ll be a pro.

‘Then I said: ‘I’ll continue with the guys that are there’. At a certain point you get angry about how… what are we doing? The bigger picture looks frustrated at you as a coach but also at how you stand in the world.

“Then I’m like, ‘You’re just a player, you just have to do your thing.’ But my personal feeling is that it’s just bad.’

Antony becomes the third player Erik ten Hag has signed from the Eredivisie this summer, after Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez.

The £84m deal will take United’s total spending to over £200m during the window.
