Alex Perry reveals why nobody wants to wear their fashion brand in Australia

Fashion designer Alex Perry has come up with a rather brutal explanation as to why his brand never became popular in Australia.

Perry founded his eponymous label in 1992 and quickly became known for his opulent red carpet dresses and jeweled corsets.

But Perry, 59, claims his designs were never “cool enough” to really take off in the Australian market, forcing him to take his business abroad.

“I was never the one watching or the cool guy, it was always about these other designers. But I kept thinking, “I make really good clothes and I think they’re really pretty,” the judge for Australia’s Next Top Model told Sunday Confidential.

While Perry’s clothes are stocked at both Myer and David Jones, he claims his clothes simply don’t appeal to Australian shoppers.

“So I started looking at what I was doing and I was like, ‘You know what, I think I’m pretty cool,’ but it’s in a glamorous way, not what’s defined as cool here,” he said.

“I always thought, I’m not sure … I don’t know if they want my clothes abroad,” Perry added.

Since then, Perry has achieved great success selling internationally and is stocked in luxury stores around the world.

His overseas appeal is bolstered by the long list of A-list celebrities who regularly wear his dresses on the red carpet, including Jennifer Lopez, Hailey Bieber, Gwyneth Paltrow, Megan Fox and Lupita Nyong’o.

Perry once confessed on The Kyle & Jackie O Show that he gets more excited when he refuses to find potential celebrity clients than he does listing his high-profile client list.

While speaking to the breakfast radio hosts, Kyle asked Sandilands, “Are you okay with saying I got dressed? [so-and-so]…?’

“I think it’s better to tell people, ‘No, we’re not going to dress you!'” Alex admitted with a laugh.

He also describes how the process works when it comes to dressing a celebrity.

“Most of the time, with all the international girls, their stylists are calling in clothes from all over the world,” he said of dressing stars, “so you never really know until it actually happens,” he explained.

“I remember looking at Jennifer Lopez’s room where they had all their clothes and thinking, ‘There’s no way we’re going to…[be the choice]”- I mean, there were hundreds of dresses in there.”

“So when it happens, it’s like a real ‘pinch me’ moment.”

Perry said that until a celebrity actually walks down a red carpet runway, he’s never really sure their dress will be the one they pick — even if it’s made specifically for the event.

“That’s just part of what this job is,” he admitted.
