Americans have slammed Meghan Markle after she ‘compared herself’ to Nelson Mandela and say she needs to ‘move on’ from the royals as she takes yet another thinly veiled swipe at The Firm.
The Duchess of Sussex, 41, has been hit with yet more incredulous backlash after giving a tell-all interview about her Montecito life with Prince Harry and their two children to The Cut.
Meghan claims that she was told by a cast member of the Lion King in 2019 that South Africans ‘danced in the street’ like when ‘Mandela was freed from prison’ when their son Archie was born.
But Americans have branded her latest comments as ‘sickening’, claiming that she is ‘so out of touch’ with the real world.
She has also been slammed for ‘using her title’ to keep ‘trashing the institution’ that gave it to her after the couple decided to step down as working royals.
Meghan’s new bombshell interview even claims that she and Prince Harry were ‘upsetting the dynamic of the hierarchy… just by existing’ before they quit.
Journalist Lucy Burge, from Boston, said: ‘If Meghan Markle hates the royal family so much why is she still using the Duchess of Sussex title? She’s the fakest, most annoying person alive.’
Piers Morgan also bashed her words, calling her interview a ‘revoltingly self-aggrandizing, disingenuous and hypocritical load of royal-bashing tosh’.
He added that the Mandela anecdote had him ‘gagging’, while others were quick to accuse her of making the story up.
Meghan Markle, 41, has been slammed for her thinly veiled attack on the royal family in a new interview for The Cut. The Duchess of Sussex has been branded a ‘liar’ and a ‘fantasist’ after claiming that she was told South Africans ‘danced in the street’ when Archie was born, mirroring the reaction when Nelson Mandela was finally freed
Many people said the former actress had ‘no self-awareness’, with others branding her a ‘liar’ after ‘comparing herself’ to Nelson Mandela. Others said that the interview was ‘sickening’ and that she needs to ‘move on’
Meghan last week launched her long-awaited Spotify podcast, talking to a series of guests on Archetypes – starting with tennis star Serena Williams. She again found herself being criticized after making a claim about a fire on a royal tour which were rebuffed by Buckingham Palace
One person said: ‘What has Meghan Markle been doing since she left the royal family?
‘Every time she opens her mouth it is to bad-mouth them all and lie. It was so bad, she is now comparing herself to Nelson Mandela!’
Another added: ‘It doesn’t make sense that Megsy still use the Royal Title that the Queen gave them while she keeps thrashing them every day.
‘This is a propaganda piece to spread “Meghan’s truth”. Return the Royal Title that she hates so much and live your life in peace.’
She was also slammed for claiming Prince Harry told her ‘I lost my dad’, after he and Prince Charles had a public fall out over his decision to step away from The Firm.
Royal experts previously claimed that Harry was back in touch with his father, but this relationship with his brother Prince William had not yet ‘fully recovered’ after the couples Oprah interview.
One person said: ‘Meghan Markle has infamously rejected and demonized her own dad, Tom.
‘In her latest vanity PR interview she says Prince Harry told her “I lost my dad” too. That is huge.
‘It will cause enormous damage to Prince Charles, a King in waiting, and she knows it. Nasty, nasty, nasty.’
The Cut also deleted their initial social media promotion of the exclusive interview, so that they could repost with her royal title.
The post took out Meghan’s last name, Markle, and replaced it with her royal moniker of the ‘Duchess of Sussex’.
Royal reporter Richard Palmer also was quick to hit out at her claims that press were trying to take pictures of her while she dropped Archie off to school.
She claims in the interview that she was told by a South African that people ‘danced in the street’ when Archie was born like when Mandela was freed. Meghan and Harry met with Graca Machel, the widow of Nelson Mandela in October 2019 in Johannesburg
Dozens of people were quick to criticize the former royal, with one saying her ‘bitchy behavior’ was the catalyst for a lot of the problems. Another said that she was ‘nasty’ for mentioning Harry’s relationship with Prince Charles
Harry and Meghan’s visit to the UK and Germany
- Monday, September 5: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will travel to Manchester for the One Young World Summit, an event which brings together young leaders from more than 190 countries
- Tuesday, September 6: Harry and Meghan will head to Germany for the Invictus Games Dusseldorf 2023 One Year to Go event
- Thursday, September 8: The Sussexes then return to the UK for the WellChild Awards in London
Others also pointe out that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are able to drop their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, off to school without images being taken.
Palmer said: ‘I’m afraid Meghan is a fantasist if she believes this would be a daily occurrence in the UK, where the code has strict rules about treatment of children in education.’
Dan Wootton, columnist for MailOnline, added: ‘The lies in this interview are extraordinarily.
‘Meghan claims there would be a royal press pen with 40 photographers each time she took Archie to school.
‘Rubbish! William and Kate drop their kids off to school most days, sight unseen.’
In the interview to The Cut – part of New York magazine – she claimed that what the couple asked for when they wanted financial freedom was not ‘reinventing the wheel’.
The fashion publication reported today that Meghan listed a ‘handful of princes and princesses and dukes who have the very arrangement they wanted’, although none of these royals are named in the article.
Speaking to New York-based features writer Allison P Davis, Meghan said: ‘That, for whatever reason, is not something that we were allowed to do, even though several other members of the family do that exact thing.’
Asked ‘Why do you think that is?’, she simply replied: ‘Why do you think that is?’, with the interviewer Ms Davis saying that she said this ‘right back with a side-eye that suggests I should understand without having to be told’.
The Duchess of Sussex, 41, was also branded as ‘sickening’ after ‘comparing herself’ to Nelson Mandela She claims in the interview that she was told by a South African that people ‘danced in the street’ when Archie, pictured with Harry, Meghan and sister Lilibet on a Christmas card, was born like when Mandela was freed
Others were quick to brand the Duchess of Sussex as a ‘liar’ after the interview was published. They posted her words along with a hashtag of #ThingsThatNeverHappened
Meghan also said: ‘I’m getting back … on Instagram’ – with Ms Davies describing ‘her eyes alight and devilish’.
It comes after she closed all of her social media accounts ahead of her wedding to Harry in 2018.
But further down the article, it says: ‘Later, Meghan would relay she was no longer sure she would actually return to Instagram.’
The article states that Harry and Meghan suggested to ‘The Firm’ that they should be allowed to work on behalf of the monarchy but make their own money, with the Duchess saying: ‘Then maybe all the noise would stop.’
The article says: ‘They also thought it best to leave the U.K. (and the U.K. press) to do it. They were willing to go to basically any commonwealth, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, anywhere.
‘Anything to just … because just by existing, we were upsetting the dynamic of the hierarchy. So we go, “Okay, fine, let’s get out of here. Happy to,” ‘she says, putting her hands up in mock defeat.
‘Meghan asserts that what they were asking for wasn’t “reinventing the wheel” and lists a handful of princes and princesses and dukes who have the very arrangement they wanted.
The article also claims that Meghan was considering starting up her Instagram account again. She closed all of her social media accounts ahead of her wedding to Harry in 2018.
”’That, for whatever reason, is not something that we were allowed to do, even though several other members of the family do that exact thing.”
‘Why do you think that is? I ask. “Why do you think that is?” she says right back with a side-eye that suggests I should understand without having to be told.’
It comes as a royal expert said today that Harry and Meghan are very unlikely to visit the Queen at Balmoral when they return to Britain for a trip next week, and warned that the ‘family rift is getting worse, not better’.
The Sussex’s have an ongoing row about their security with the Home Office – and tensions with the Royal Family have been deepened by mounting concerns over what will be published in Harry’s upcoming biography.
These issues will no doubt worsen after Meghan’s latest comments published in The Cut today, in addition to her making veiled criticisms of the family in her new Spotify podcast released last week.
In that podcast, Meghan fired a new broadside at royal aides as she claimed she was forced to continue with engagements on a tour of South Africa despite being left in tears when her son Archie narrowly escaped a fire in his bedroom. The Duchess also hit out at those who criticized her for being ‘ambitious’ when she started dating Harry, in a chat with tennis legend Serena Williams.
Royal experts said they would be ‘very surprised’ if the Sussex’s visit the Queen at Balmoral, where she is likely to remain for the next few weeks as concerns grow over her mobility issues.
