“Americans will not tolerate another January 6th,” says Mike Pence, defending Trump’s calls for protests

Mike Pence defended Donald Trump’s calls for his supporters to protest a possible impending impeachment, claiming the demonstrations are unlikely to turn violent because the public will not “tolerate” another Jan. 6-like disaster.

The former vice president is among the most vocal potential candidates for 2024 against the prospect of Trump being indicted this week in a case involving hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election campaign.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg released a memo over the weekend assuring employees they were taking precautions to address threats against the office.

The potential for impeachment has only bolstered support for Trump on the right.

“I am stunned at the idea of ​​indicting a former President of the United States during a crime spree in New York City,” Pence told ABC This Week host Jonathan Karl on Sunday. “The fact that the Manhattan Attorney’s Office thinks indicting President Trump is his top priority I think just tells you everything you need to know about the radical left in this country.”

Pence, who reiterated during the interview that he is considering running for president in 2024, denounced the entire case against Trump as a “politically charged charge.”

“I just feel like it’s just not what the American people want to see,” the Republican said. “We have real challenges in this country today.”

“People are facing record inflation, a crisis on our border. We have war in Eastern Europe, the American people are concerned about the future and here we are again, back in another politically charged prosecution aimed at the former President of the United States,” he continued.

“I would only hope for improvement.”

Trump sent a tweet over the weekend urging his supporters to take to the streets to protest his arrest or indictment.

Many felt this was a repeat of what happened on Jan. 6, when Trump called on his social media supporters to demonstrate on Jan. 6, 2021 against their lawmakers who were confirming the results of the 2020 presidential election — what happened that day led to the infamous attack on the Capitol.

“The American people have a constitutional right to peaceful assembly,” Pence said when asked about Trump’s call to action.

“We know what happened the last time he said it,” Karl urged.

“The frustration that the American people feel at a two-tier justice system in this country is well-founded, I think, but I think people understand that if they speak out about this, if this happens on Tuesday, they need to do this peacefully and understand.” do it in a lawful manner,” stressed the ex-vice president.
