The governor of Aydin province told Turkish broadcaster CNN Turk that five others had been injured, one of them in critical condition.

Governor Huseyin Aksoy said initial testimony from a restaurant worker indicated a cooking gas canister had a leak, leading to an explosion around 3:35 p.m. local time.

Reporters also said that there was a fire after the explosion at the restaurant in Aydin’s Nazilli district. The footage showed fire engines and ambulances at the scene.

Television images show the charred remains of the two-story restaurant, whose windows and doors were blown away by the blast.

Minister of Justice of the Republic of Turkey Bekir Bozdag tweeted: “The person alleged to have caused the explosion has been taken into custody.

“May our Lord not allow such painful events to happen again to our people and country.”
