Animal rights activists spark anger after demanding Pork Pie Island be renamed Vegan Pie Roundabout

Animal rights activists spark anger after demanding Pork Pie Island be renamed Vegan Pie Roundabout to “inspire people to eat healthier”.

  • PETA called for Leicester’s Pork Pie Island to be renamed the Vegan Pie Roundabout
  • Activist claims a name change would help ease the strain on the congested NHS
  • Leicester locals slammed the proposal, which said it would “leave our city’s history alone”.

Vegan activists have urged the City of Leicester to rename a traffic circle called Pork Pie Island the Vegan Pie Roundabout.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) suggested the controversial move in a letter to Leicester Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby, saying the island should be renamed to promote healthier food.

Pork Pie Island was named by locals after a 1930’s library located next to the roundabout. The library has a series of circular sections surrounding its main building, which looks slightly like a pork pie from a bird’s-eye view.

Kate Werner, PETA’s senior campaigns manager, claimed the word ‘vegan’ was invented in Leicester and a name change would inspire residents to choose meat-free foods.

She said: “This timely name change would inspire healthier food choices that help the environment, celebrate Leicester’s heritage and prevent animal suffering. This is not wishful thinking.

“A varied, plant-based diet has been shown to prevent heart disease, diabetes, belly fat and cancer.

“Encouraging people to eat a plant-based diet could also help ease the strain on Leicester’s already congested NHS.

“The United Nations has declared that a global shift to a plant-based diet is urgently needed.

“And since the word ‘vegan’ was coined in Leicester by Donald Watson in 1944, it would also be a great way to celebrate the city’s vegan and cake-loving heritage.”

However, the people of Leicester were unfazed by the proposal and were instead met with anger and confusion from local residents. Pictured: Roundabout on Pork Pie Island

Referring to a recent report that Leicestershire had high levels of obesity, Ms Werner added: “PETA would like to offer the local community a generous supply of delicious vegan cakes to celebrate the name change.”

Simon Chambers said: “Are you having fun? It has nothing to do with a real pork pie. Please leave the history of our city alone.”

Carol Lennon commented: “Even if you called it the Radish Roundabout, literally everyone would call it Pork Pie Island, so what’s the point? Some things are best left alone.”

Stephen Ward added: “My grandfather designed the library for which the island is named. It’s an iconic building in Leicester and the island is synonymous with it. Stop bowing to the namby pamby nanny state.

Adam Baker joked: “No animals were harmed in the naming of this roundabout – get a life folks. For heaven’s sake, how is the name of a roundabout supposed to affect what you eat?’

And Jay Mulla said, “Ridiculous. I’ve been a vegetarian for over 35 years and I really get annoyed by things like this.

“People are vegans/vegetarians by choice. Many other people choose to eat meat. Why do some people try to force their decisions on other people?’

The Grade II Library, which gives the island its name, was once known as Southfields Library but has recently reopened as the Pork Pie Library and Community Centre. It is run by Leicester City Council.

Leicester City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said: “It’s a fun and rather clever way to draw attention to yourself and your cause – but there’s no way to change the name that the people of the library and the roundabout next to it.

“It has been known locally as the Pork Pie Library since it was built in the 1930s thanks to its distinctive round shape. Any talk of changing his name is pie in the sky.”
