Tennis star Ash Barty may have retired last year, but her popularity and commercial appeal in Australia is at an all-time high – ranking above the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and even Hollywood superstar Hugh Jackman.

The humble 26-year-old Grand Slam champion recently ranked No. 1 in a measure of the marketability of athletes and other stars in Australia, surpassing some of the biggest names in the industry.

The Gemba Group tracks the ‘liking’ and ‘awareness’ of athletes in the Australian public and determines and ranks their ‘star power’ accordingly.

According to the latest evidence, Barty was ahead of Federer and Nadal – with tennis player and Australian of the Year Dylan Alcott in fourth place.

Cricketers Pat Cummins and Steve Smith are also in the top 10 but Nick Kyrgios does not make the list.

Even compared to non-sporting talent, Barty remains at the top, edging out Hugh Jackman and musician Ed Sheeran.

The Australian gold girl is still hot for sponsors, with recent ones including telecom giant Optus, UKG, Marriott, RADO, Qantas, Vegemite and AIA.

Although he no longer plays, Barty is also still supported by tennis equipment sponsors FILA and Head.

Last month, Barty won the Don Award – considered the highest honor in Australian sport – for her heroics on court and humility off court, becoming only the third athlete to pick up the gong for a second time.

Also in December, Barty received Australian tennis’ top honor, the Newcombe Medal, for the fifth consecutive year.

Interestingly, Barty was also the most Googled Australian character in 2022, even ousting Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The former world No. 1 has dismissed all suggestions that she could return to professional sport in the future and unlike many former professional athletes, Barty has absolutely no regrets about her decision to retire.

“To be honest, I think what surprised me the most is how comfortable I feel,” she told the New York Times earlier this month.

“I think it was probably a normal fear or insecurity not knowing what my post-tennis life would be like after being so focused.”

While Barty has not been active on the tennis tour, it has been a busy year for the former tennis star.

She married her longtime partner Garry Kissick, published her memoir My Dream Time and launched her children’s book series Little Ash with Jasmine McGaughey and Jade Goodwin.

Barty will remain involved with tennis by founding an elite academy in Australia with Jason Stoltenberg and Craig Tizzer and says she is interested in mentoring, but not coaching, junior players.
