Country star Naomi Judd was alive when her daughter Ashley found her with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

In a harrowing essay in The New York Times, Ashley described how it was “the most harrowing day of my life” to discover her mother following her suicide in April.

“The trauma of discovering and then holding her working body haunts my nights,” she wrote.

But instead of being able to comfort Naomi in her final moments, Ashley said cops interrogated her harshly and kept her away from her mother.

“I felt cornered and powerless when law enforcement officers began questioning me as my mother’s last life faded away,” she wrote, ‘went home,’ as we say in Appalachia.’

Ashley revealed the heartbreaking details when she announced she was taking a “legal reason” to prevent the public from having access to police files on sensitive and intimate personal situations.

“I intend to make the subsequent invasion of privacy – the privacy of the deceased person and family – both a personal and legal cause,” she wrote.

Naomi died in April 2022 at the age of 76 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Nashville coroner confirmed last week.

According to the report, Judd struggled with “significant” anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder.

Ashley said she was in such shock after finding her dying mother that she answered police questions “I wouldn’t have answered any other day” and never considered if the public would have access to it later.

“In the immediate aftermath of a life-changing tragedy, when we are in a state of acute shock, trauma, panic and despair, the authorities turn up to speak to us,” she wrote, “because many of us are socially conditioned to work with the Law enforcement agencies, we are completely vulnerable in what we say.’

“The men present left us feeling bereft of any sensitive boundary, interrogated and, in my case, as if I were a possible suspect in my mother’s suicide.”

Ashley said she didn’t blame officers at the scene for their actions, but blamed the “terrible, outdated interview procedures and methods of interacting with family members who are in shock or trauma” that she believed they were taught.
