At least three juveniles were detained at the scene for questioning, Carvalho said.
There were no arrests.
According to the LA Times, there has been a recent spike in gang activity in the San Fernando Valley that has spread to several public schools, including Van Nuys High.
The LAPD has asked that anyone with information about the stabbing contact police.
The Los Angeles Unified school district said the high school will remain on lockdown until police give the all-clear.
“Students are safe and LASPD will remain on site and continue to provide safety and support to students and staff.” “Students’ parents have been notified,” LAUSD said in a statement.
As of 1:00 p.m. PST, students remained in lockdown and lunch would be brought to them, officials said. The school could also dismiss students through a staggered layoff.
“This is one of those moments where you hold your breath and hope that the initial information is not as bad as what actually happened,” said Superintendent Carvalho.
He added: “An incident like this is one incident too many.”

Police responded to the knife attack at the school around 11 a.m. Wednesday
