A young boy critically injured after stepping off his elementary school bus and being hit by a car has miraculously awakened from his coma – but is suffering from amnesia.

Harrison Grey, 8, was walking home from school around 3pm on December 6 when it was learned he ran from behind the back of the bus onto the road in Bees Creek, south-east Darwin.

He spent fifteen days in an induced coma in the intensive care unit at Royal Darwin Hospital before being transferred to another ward on December 21 and waking up from his coma just before Christmas.

He is now undergoing rehabilitation at a specialist South Australian clinic for pediatric neurology, where the eight-year-old is learning to talk, eat and walk again, alongside treatment for his ‘post-traumatic amnesia’.

The boy’s parents, Paula Apostles and Dean Gray, are thrilled at his miraculous recovery but admit it will go a very long way to getting Harry back to his old self.

“His long-term prognosis is still unknown…Stay strong boy you can do this,” Ms. Apostles wrote on Facebook.

She also said she wants to raise awareness about road safety.

“The school holidays are starting and everyone needs to be aware that children are more on or near roads and parking lots,” she said.

Family friend Casey Speirs organized a GoFundMe to help his family with their ongoing medical bills and said the family is extremely grateful to the community for their support.

The appeal raised more than $14,000, with Ms Speirs adding that any additional funds not needed for treatment would go to the Royal Darwin Hospital intensive care team.

Local Domino’s pizza shops are also organizing their own fundraiser by donating $2 from every pizza sold this Wednesday, January 11 to his rehabilitation.

“I can’t imagine what the Gray family is going through right now,” Alex Mahoney, who runs Palmerston and Karama stores, told NT News.

“I and the rest of Darwin Domino’s businesses want to do everything we can to offer our support while Harrison continues to receive medical attention.

“With our own team members on the road delivering safe, hot meals to the community every day, raising road safety awareness is very important to us.”
