Bereaved woman with 36HH bust wins gender discrimination case because her prison bras were TOO small for her

  • The woman, in her forties, was told that the largest size her prison could accommodate was 40E
  • When she tried it on she found that the cup size of the bra was way too small

A female prisoner has won a gender discrimination case against a UK prison because the bras they provided were too small for her.

The woman, in her 40s, had asked for a bra to fit her 36HH chest measurement, but prison officials told her the largest size they could offer was 40E.

When she tried it on she found that the cup size of the bra was way too small while the back size was too big and there were no underwires either.

The woman then complained to prison staff, but was told, “Sorry, the largest we have in stock is size E. Please contact health services or management to order some.”

This prompted her to file a gender discrimination lawsuit against the prison via a Discrimination Incident Reporting Form (DIRF), which was later upheld.

The prisoner told the magazine “Prisoners”. within time. “It went around me a time and a half.” There’s no point in giving a woman my size a non-wired bra. It just won’t work.’

In April, she received a response from her prison’s Diversity and Inclusion Manager, which said, “I recognize this is unacceptable and a matter of decency and I apologize that this has not been addressed.”

“I will maintain this DIRF.” “We will ensure that available bra sizes increase in the future.”

Last month she was given the gift of three size 36HH underwired bras, which were reportedly ordered from lingerie company Fantasie and would have cost £35 each if ordered online.

She said, ‘The bras have arrived and they fit!’ They are very comfortable and easy to wear.’

A prison service spokesman said if a prisoner requires clothing larger than the sizes available to him, governors or directors should allow friends or relatives to drop them off at the prison.

They added that if this is not possible, the prison must purchase the required size clothing.
