President Joe Biden said Wednesday he hopes to see “peace and security” when he visits the southern border next week as he plans to deliver a speech on migration from the White House on Thursday.
Biden was asked on the South Lawn on Wednesday what he hopes to see when he takes a trip to the US-Mexico border, his first as president.
“Peace and security,” he answered first. Before you say, “No, I’ll see what’s up. I’m going to give a speech on border security tomorrow and you’ll hear more about it tomorrow.”
Previously, while leaving Kentucky and Ohio, he confirmed that he was preparing to travel.
“That’s my intention, we’re working out the details now,” Biden said told reporters.
His comment followed a Wall Street Journal report that he was “strongly considering” a trip there.

Biden raised questions during his first two years in office about why he hadn’t visited the border. His comment came a day after White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said “misinformation” about immigration could help people smugglers.
It is a politically treacherous move. Vice President Kamala Harris was hit hard when she told migrants on a trip to Guatemala not to come to the US. Then she faced setbacks when she called the border “safe” last year when more than 2 million migrants were arrested.
The Trump-era Title 42 authority, used to repatriate migrants citing the COVID pandemic, was due to expire before Christmas and was then extended after Chief Justice John Roberts issued a stay of a lower court ruling. The Supreme Court ruled after Christmas that the authority will be maintained indefinitely, with the case set to be heard next month.

Biden’s trip comes after thousands of people crossed the border daily amid confusion over Title 42

So far, Biden’s only itinerary is a visit to Mexico City, where he will meet President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and Canadian President Justin Trudeau at the newly launched “three amigos” summit.
Immigration will certainly be on the agenda as thousands of migrants cross the southern border every day.
By pushing the limit, Biden is making a concession to critics and expecting hits. The RNC has been asking for months when Biden last visited the border. In late November, Jean-Pierre said Biden had been at the border, although Fox News reported he hadn’t been there as president or for two terms as vice president, but drove through El Paso in 2008.
