The New England Patriots are expected to make significant changes after the franchise failed to make the playoffs for the second time in three seasons.

Bill Belichick is currently looking for an offensive coordinator after a tough season under former Detroit Lions head coach and longtime defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.

It comes after talks with owner Robert Kraft after a difficult season that saw the Patriots hampered by a 26th-ranked offense. Of course, Belichick’s position is secure, but some of his assistants may not be so lucky, according to NBC Sports Boston.

“Belichick isn’t going to impale anyone’s head for the amusement of the masses,” said Beat writer Tom E. Curran. “But to my knowledge, offense coach reassignments will occur and multiple offense coaches will be considered for the Patriots 2023 staff.”

The Pats announced Thursday that they would begin interviews for an offensive coordinator next week. During their 8-9 season, which ended in a loss to an emotionally charged Buffalo, New England failed to appoint an official OC.

In every way, Patricia was the equivalent – calling plays for Mac Jones and the offense.

Joe Judge, former New York Giants head coach and ex-Patriots special teams coordinator, also held a senior position as offense coach.

With Belichick set to go in a different direction, it remains unclear if the pair will remain on the New England staff.

Patricia often drew the ire of Patriots fans on social media, even frustrating Mac Jones during a season of offensive inefficiency.

In more positive news for the franchise, it announced that it “has begun contract renewal talks [inside linebackers coach] Jerod Mayo who would keep him in the team long-term.

Mayo was a member of the Patriots roster for eight seasons and has been an assistant for four years.

He has attracted interest from numerous franchises in need of a coach, including the Carolina Panthers who asked to interview Mayo for his position as head coach.

Cleveland also asked to speak to him about her vacant role as defense coordinator.
