A crowd of guests sparked a stampede when they mistook a group of CrossFit runners for rioters being pursued by authorities in the northeastern Brazilian state of Recife.

Customers were scattered across tables on the sidewalk, suddenly got up from their tables and started running, a surveillance camera inside the Cervejaria Alphaiate bar showed.

In the video, a woman was seen jogging and looking back while two other CrossFit gym members followed her steps, including a man with a dog on a leash.

One customer seemed to sense she was in danger, immediately grabbed her purse and ran when a man sitting next to her followed her.

Within seconds, dozens of patrons left their tables and stormed down the sidewalk. A shocked customer fell out of his chair and onto the pavement as more CrossFitters ran past the restaurant.

dr Amyr Kelner told Brazil news agency G1 that he was sitting at a table with six people when his girlfriend grabbed her bag and fled.

“It was really quick. People came slowly, and as they approached our table, they started running…” said Dr. waiter. “She got up and at that moment someone shouted that it was a (police sweeper). So I got up, shouted that it was sweeping too, and ran away.’

The doctor recalled that someone close to him thought he had a gun when they saw him put his cell phone and wallet in his pocket.

dr Kelner said customers from nearby facilities also started running after noticing the rush of people heading towards them.

He and his group of friends ran to another bar for refuge, then realized nothing was happening.

“Everyone started laughing and went back to the tables like nothing happened,” said Dr. waiter.

Cervejaria Alphaiate management told G1 on Thursday that the incident was simply “a misunderstanding”.

“It was clarified that nothing happened, in a few minutes everyone present returned to their tables and continued the service,” the restaurant said.

It highlighted the moment on Friday by posting a video of waiters running to empty tables on its Instagram.
