The celebrations for Brian Harman, the Georgia native who has just been crowned Champion Golfer of the Year, begin in a hurry.
Going into the final round at Hoylake on Sunday with a 36-hole and 54-hole lead, Harman stayed steady despite the rain to win his first major championship at the Open by six shots.
Minutes after picking up the Claret Jug for the first time, Harman thanked his family and those who organized the tournament – while acknowledging that he had a new task ahead of him.
“I have to thank my wife and my family back home,” Harman said. I can’t wait to be with them again tomorrow. I think I need to have a few pints of this trophy first.
“This golf course was a real test, it was laid out so well despite the weather.” Thank you, the greens were perfect, the golf course was excellent.

Born in Georgia, he celebrated his third professional win and his first major title
He accomplished this by staying steady in the rain and beating the field at Hoylake by six strokes
“And finally I would like to thank the R&A for putting together such a great championship.” “To all the fans for all the kind words and to the fans at home who cheered me on. Thank you – I appreciate it.”
Harman later spoke to NBC Sports’ Mike Tirico about his mindset during the tournament.
“The hardest part was not getting off to a good start the last two days… That’s what I’ve struggled with a lot in my career, which is pushing myself… but my Caddy Scott Tway helped me with that.”
He added, “I really didn’t think about winning the tournament until I hit the last putt.”
When asked what it means to have his name engraved on golf’s most famous trophy, Harman said, “As cool as it gets.” “It’s the best tournament in the world and I’m just thrilled.”
