Robyn, who now lives in Melbourne, listed the weather and the popularity of barefoot walking as some of the surprising things she encountered. She’s lived here for five years and still doesn’t reconcile some Australian habits, but she’s obsessed with others
“Australian things that sent me into a coma when I first moved here from the UK,” Robyn captioned her now-viral TikTok.
The number one habit that surprised her was seeing people walking around barefoot in supermarkets and other stores.
“That shocked me. You would never catch anyone in the UK who wasn’t barefoot on a beach,” she said.
The second surprise was the fact that alcohol is not sold in supermarkets.
“I had no idea it was nothing. I thought at first: “Where do I buy wine?” and someone told me to go to Bottle-O and I said, “What’s a Bottle-O?”
‘I had no idea. It shook me to the core,’ she said.
She was also surprised by the weather, which reached temperatures of up to 42 degrees Celsius.
“When I first lived here, I lived in Sydney and it wiped me out, absolutely killed me,” she said.
However, there were two discoveries that came as a nice surprise.
The first was Lemon, Lime and Bitters, a popular cocktail in Australia.
“This surprise was in the best possible way. Thank you for introducing me to this, it’s amazing stuff. It’s like liquid gold,’ she said.
She was also impressed with espresso martinis, another popular cocktail.
“I’m pretty sure you can get espresso martinis in the UK? But I’m from a small coastal town,” she explained.
Her followers were amused by the list, but one feature divided opinion among the Aussies.
Several people shared her love of not wearing shoes.
“I’ve been fighting shoes since elementary school lol. I hate shoes,” said one woman.
However, others are not comfortable with going barefoot in places other than the beach.
“I’m Australian and it still scares me about barefoot people in the supermarket,” said one man.
“Barefoot in the supermarket makes me sick,” agreed one woman.
