Bronco Payne Haas’ mother, Uiatu ‘Joan’ Taufua, is said to have fled a car accident from police

The mother of a soccer star was reportedly driving with a suspended license and fleeing police before being involved in a horrific accident that claimed three lives and left them in critical condition.

Uiatu ‘Joan’ Taufua, 46, whose son is Brisbane Broncos player Payne Haas, remains hospitalized after being pulled from a black Mercedes car after Friday’s collision with a silver Mercedes and an electricity pole in the Gold Coast hinterland .

Police claim Ms Taufua was seen “driving irregularly” shortly before the accident, which took place on Bonogin Road in Bonogin around 5pm, and sped away when a patrol activated lights and sirens to stop her.

Police said they did not pursue the car for reasons of public safety before Ms Taufua fell 1km down the road.

Ms Taufua’s license was allegedly suspended after she served a month-long prison sentence that ended in October for assaulting two security guards at the Star Gold Coast Casino.

After Ms Taufua was pulled from her vehicle by a man living nearby, she was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital, where she is left with multiple fractures, internal injuries and contused lungs.

The three victims of the accident in the silver Mercedes have been identified as Chris Fawcett, 79, his partner Susan Zimmer, 70, and Ms. Zimmer’s daughter Stephanie, 35.

Ms Zimmer’s surviving daughter Claudine Snow, who lives in north NSW, said she would never be the same after the tragedy.

“My sister was mentally challenged but could light up the room and make the coldest of hearts laugh,” she told Nine News.

“She was incredible.”

Three people were killed in a horrific collision between two cars on Bonogin Road in the Gold Coast hinterland on Friday evening

Ms Snow said her mother, who worked as a qualified accountant, was her best friend.

Mr Fawcett was a former skin cancer specialist who Ms Snow said had “saved so many lives”.

A family friend described the couple as “lovely people”.

“Sue was always so friendly and upbeat,” she told the Courier Mail.

Three crosses were erected near the charred accident site in honor of the victims.

Mr Fawcett and Stephanie were dead when rescue workers arrived at the scene and despite their desperate efforts, Mrs Zimmer died a short time later.

Gold Coast Superintendent Craig Hanlon said the scene shocked the police and rescue workers present, as well as members of the public in attendance.

The 45-year-old man who helped extricate Ms Taufua from her burning car required treatment at Robina Hospital for “emotional distress”.

A local woman said her husband ran to help after hearing a “massive bang” and pulling a woman out of a vehicle just before the blast.

Gold Coast Superintendent Craig Hanlon said the force of the impact threw the silver Mercedes into a power pole, which fell on Ms Taufua’s vehicle, setting it on fire.

Supt Hanlon expressed his condolences to the victims’ friends and family.

“It was a tragic, tragic incident,” he told reporters.

“But losing three people from the same family is something you can’t recover from.

“The thoughts and prayers of the Queensland Police Service are with their friends and family at this time.”

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.

More than 1,000 homes and businesses in the area were left without power after the utility pole fell, although most had their lights restored two hours after the accident.
