Rescue services are responding to reports of a ‘corpse’ floating near Sydney beach – but it turned out to be something far less sinister

A mysterious object floating in the water has caused major alarm at a popular beach during the school holidays.

Rescue services rushed to Collaroy Beach on Sydney’s North Beaches around 8am on Wednesday, following reports from shocked locals of a possible body floating in the water.

A massive search was launched.

According to unconfirmed reports, an overturned kayak was found near the southeast of Collaroy Rockpool swimming pools.

Police and ambulance crews searched the area 400 m east of the end of Brissenden Avenue with a A rescue helicopter was deployed at the scene, the Manly Daily reported.

Police told Daily Mail Australia that the “body” floating in the water turned out to be a buoy.

The two-hour search has since been called off.
