Cam Smith was nominated for PGA Tour Player of the Year just days after being suspended for joining LIV Golf

LIV golf rebel Cam Smith is nominated for PGA Tour Player of the Year alongside Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler… but he may not be able to vote now as he’s suspended from the traditional circuit!

  • Cam Smith was suspended from the PGA Tour Friday after making his LIV golf debut
  • The Australian made the same impression as he did during the Tour season
  • It would be a shock if Smith won the Jack Nicklaus Award after leaving
  • It’s unclear if Smith and other ex-Tour players can vote for the POTY

The PGA Tour issued a surprise Monday, announcing that newest LIV golf star Cam Smith is indeed a contender for Tour Player of the Year.

Smith, who defected to LIV Golf last week, made his debut for the Saudi-backed breakaway league outside of Boston on Friday.

The Australian was nominated alongside golf purist Scottie Scheffler and Tour frontman Rory McIlroy.

Based on the awards alone, it’s no surprise that Smith was nominated and anointed as one of the top three on the tour this season.

Fittingly, he won the British Open in July and added victories at the Players Championship and Sentry Tournament of Champions to his campaign resume.

Though Smith is seen as a professional treason by the tour, it’s chilling to see his name alongside McIlroy and Scheffler’s.

Smith was suspended from all PGA Tour tournaments after his first ball left the tee during Friday’s LIV golf event.

However, it remains to be seen whether Smith or his LIV colleagues will be able to vote.

According to the tour’s press release, PGA Tour members who competed in at least 15 FedEx Cup events during the 2021-22 season will be eligible to vote.

The Brisbane played 18 events but his membership has been suspended along with all LIV Golf members including Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brookes Koepka and Dustin Johnson.

Blacksmith done Second in the tour scoring average (69.203) while earning seven top 10 finishes.

The odds of Smith winning the Jack Nicklaus Award seem incredibly slim for a variety of reasons.

It would be another public blow to the tour if Smith won the award, although it’s hard to imagine his former peers voting for the Australian over his fellow nominees.

Last month, McIlroy became the first player to win the FedEx Cup three times after completing the comeback of all comebacks over world No. 1 Scheffler.

After the historic win, McIlroy used his platform to praise the Tour, which he’s fought hard to achieve all season.

“This is a proud moment for me, but it should also be an incredibly proud moment for the PGA Tour,” said McIlroy.

“They’ve had some rough times this year but we’re getting through it. “It was a very turbulent era in our game.

“This is the best place in the world to play golf. I don’t know why you want to play somewhere else.’

While Smith has faced immense testing since – and before – joining LIV Golf, he received a rapturous reception during the LIV event in Bolton, MA.

The Open champion finished just outside of the sudden death threesome playoff after faltering on the last two holes.

Although he missed after leading into 17th place, Smith remained content to just be at the LIV circuit.

“Getting out of here today and doing what I did was pretty cool,” he said after Sunday’s action.

“It was great out there – the competition is fantastic.

“It’s loud and it feels like the course has a heartbeat. I love this and can’t wait to continue.”
