Holding the Man (2015)

The Greenhouse (2021)

The Greenhouse is a magical realism drama that centers on the eldest child of two women, Beth, who discovers a portal to the past on her family’s property. As her widowed mother Ruth’s sixtieth birthday approaches and her dysfunctional siblings Drew, Doonie, and Raf return, Beth is swept up in images of their idyllic childhood and relives moments that shaped her adolescence. Despite Ruth’s warnings, and as real-world tensions mount between the siblings, Beth becomes dependent on the greenhouse, soon realizing that it is not the paradise she believes it is.

Fighting Season (2018)

Foxtel has delivered some great Australian dramas this year, and rounding off the year is the highly anticipated war drama Fighting Season.

As the film opens, Captain Ted Nordenfelt (Ewen Leslie, Top of the Lake and The Daughter) is sending a text message to his wife, Captain Kim Nordenfelt (Kate Mulvany, Secret City and The Great Gatsby). Little does he know that it will be his last contact with her as he was killed during a tour of Afghanistan in 2010.

His squadron – which includes Sergeant Sean “Speedo” Collins (Jay Ryan, Beauty and the Beast, and Offspring), who is clearly suffering from PTSD; Pte Jarrod Vogel (George Pullar, A Place To Call Home, and Playing For Keeps), a young private who has found his calling; Pte Illsara’elu “Izzy” Ulalei (Marco Alosio), a wounded and young larrikin; and Cpl Peter “Pepsi” Aboud (Julian Maroun, Romper Stomper and Janet King), a mischievous prankster who loves the adrenaline rush and the feeling of wanting to make a difference in the world – returning home from defeat to a near-empty airport, with only their families to greet them.

Ali & the Ball (2008)

Ali, a spirited eight-year-old boy, lives in the camp with his mother and younger sister, Fatima. The harsh realities of their lives are taking their toll; Fatima sits and watches through the fence, and his mother’s only solace is the little red sweater she knits over and over again. Ali tries to make the most of life – playing ball with the other children and drawing. His only distraction is the car that parks outside the fence every day – a family waiting to pick up one of the guards. A young girl watches him from the back window. One day, when the guards confiscate his mother’s precious knitting needles, Ali is forced to intervene. After a failed attempt to replace the needles with sharp sticks, Ali realizes that the girl on the other side of the fence can help. He drew her a message and threw it, wrapped around a ball, over the fence. The girl returns the next day and, with a hop and a skip, throws a new set of needles over the fence. Ali could hardly believe that his plan had worked and even little Fatima smiled. Ali and Fatima ran as fast as they could to deliver the gift to their mother. However, just before they got there, a guard confiscated their mother’s remaining red thread.

Here Come The Habibs (2016)
