Chris Evans reveals the real reason he left Captain America and why he may be turning his back on Hollywood for good

Chris Evans has spoken out about why he left his multi-million dollar contract as Marvel’s Captain America.

The 42-year-old actor gained widespread recognition and became one of Hollywood’s highest-paid movie stars before stepping down in 2019 after “Avengers: Endgame.”

Now in an interview with GQ Magazine In the October issue, Chris reflects on his decision to hang up his superhero mask and why he may be turning his back on the industry for good.

The actor says: “Initially I was very apprehensive about taking the role.” I remember in my late 20s, my feelings on set and promoting films really changed: a little more fear, a little more insecurity.

“In the end you always ask yourself: Should I do this?”

Chris says as his fame grew, so did his fear, which sometimes became paralyzing.

He eventually moved from Los Angeles back to his hometown just outside of Boston, Massachusetts.

He says, “I just wasn’t sure if I was getting closer to myself or further away from myself.” And something inside me kept saying that I was getting further away – that something about this industry wasn’t healthy.

On the upheaval of returning to where he grew up, Chris adds: “[It] takes me back to a place where life was not only simpler – that’s too reductive – but also to a time when I was purer, I guess; where my ego and insecurities weren’t such a dominant force that I had to defend myself against.”

Due to his severe anxiety, compounded by the size of the iconic blockbuster franchise, Chris almost quit acting.

When asked if he would ever return to the Marvel Universe, Chris replies: “I’ll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience.” But I’m also very precious about it. I’m very proud of that.

“And like I said, sometimes I can’t believe it even happened. And I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or if it didn’t live up to expectations or if it just felt like it had nothing to do with the original.”
