Chris Rock reveals in Phoenix that he was asked to host the Oscars but turned it down

Chris Rock reveals in Phoenix he was asked to host the Oscars but turned it down… likening it to returning to the scene of a crime after being slapped by Will Smith

Months after Will Smith beat him on the Oscars stage, Chris Rock revealed during a stand-up performance that the Academy had asked him to host the Oscars.

The 57-year-old rocker was performing stand-up comedy at the Arizona Financial Theater in Phoenix on Sunday when he announced he was refusing to return to host.

The comedian, who previously hosted the 2005 and 2016 Oscars, essentially compared returning to the Dolby Theater to returning to the crime scene.

Rock said that asking him to go back would be like asking Nicole Brown Simpson to “go back to the restaurant,” referring to OJ Simpson’s late wife.

Nicole ate at an Italian restaurant, leaving her sunglasses there while waiter Ron Goldman returned to her, before they were both brutally murdered outside their home.

The comedian also revealed during the performance that he was asked to do a Super Bowl commercial after the slap, but he also declined.

Rock didn’t want to go into detail about which company asked him to star in the Super Bowl commercial.

When asked by a viewer to “talk about it,” Rock admitted that Smith’s slap hurt and added that at one point in his career, Smith played boxing legend Muhammad Ali.

“He is bigger than me. The state of Nevada would not sanction a fight between me and Will Smith,” Smith said during the show.

Rock presented the award for Best Documentary at the Oscars in late March when he made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett-Smith, who was bald and starred in GI Jane 2.

Jada was seen rolling her eyes at the joke and moments later Will strode onto the stage and slapped a stunned Rock.

Smith was banned from the Academy and all its events for 10 years after the now infamous slap in the face.

While Smith has apologized for his actions, Rock hasn’t spoken much about the slap in the past five months.

During Smith’s video apology, he revealed that he reached out to Rock personally, but the comedian wasn’t “ready” to speak to him yet.

Rock briefly mentioned the incident during Ego Death’s stand-up comedy tour, although he didn’t make a full sentence about it.
