Christie uses the first visit to New Hampshire to rail against Trump

‘It won’t end well’ for Trump: Chris Christie uses first visit to New Hampshire to rail against former president – and says he will decide whether to submit a bid for the White House by June

  • Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie returned to New Hampshire on Tuesday as he ponders a 2024 presidential nomination
  • Unlike other potential GOP hopefuls, Christie’s pitch was that he could potentially knock out Trump, as he did on the debate stage with Senator Marco Rubio in 2016
  • He argued that “you have to think about who has the ability and who has the courage to do it, because it’s not going to end well”.

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie returned to New Hampshire on Tuesday as he ponders a 2024 presidential bid that involves taking out former President Donald Trump.

Christie, a Republican presidential nominee in 2016, spoke for nearly two hours at a town hall-style event in Manchester at St. Anselm College’s New Hampshire Institute of Politics.

He recalled effectively knocking out Florida Senator Marco Rubio in 2016 by embarrassing him on a debate stage in the Granite State.

“You better have someone on stage who can do to him what I did to Marco because that’s the only thing that’s going to defeat Donald Trump,” Christie argued. “So you have to think about who has the ability and who has the courage to do it because it’s not going to end well.”

“No matter what happens, its ending will not be a quiet and peaceful one,” added the former Garden State governor.

Christie slapped Trump around a bit when the two were rivals during the 2016 campaign, but he eventually backed the now-former president after the New Jersey governor was creamed by Trump and others in the nation’s first New Hampshire primary.

Christie was then hired to lead the Trump transition should he win, but when Trump did so, Vice President Mike Pence replaced the governor.

Nonetheless, Christie advised Trump during his four-year tenure.

But he was also among the droves of Republicans who broke with Trump over his denial in the 2020 election and his role in the January 6 attack on the Capitol.

Unlike some of those Republicans, Christie never came back.

If he runs for President, it will be designed to be anti-Trump.

A decision will be made in the next 60 to 90 days, he said on Tuesday.

‘You’ll probably be able to leave by June at the latest, and then you’ll have to get on. But I also said there’s no damn compelling reason to get it sooner,’ he said.
