Clemson fired offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter Thursday and is working to hire TCU assistant Garrett Riley to replace him.

The Tigers went 11-3 last season, including a 31-14 loss to No. 6 Tennessee in the Orange Bowl.

A former Tigers quarterback and letterman of three years (1997-99), Streeter had spent 15 seasons with Clemson as a player, assistant or full-time assistant coach. He became the Tigers’ recruiting coordinator and quarterbacks coach in December 2014 before becoming passing game coordinator and then OC and going into the 2021 Cheez-It Bowl.

Coach Dabo Swinney issued a statement thanking Streeter for his time with Clemson.

“As the leader of this program, I am accountable for our people and our results,” Swinney said in a statement, “and while we made a step forward offensively in 2022, I felt it after thoroughly evaluating our offense was at the best.” Interest of our program to seek a new leadership for this position.

“I look forward to hiring a dynamic, proven leader as the Offensive Coordinator with the specific goal of meeting – and raising – Clemson’s established standard of excellence.”

Clemson ranked 30th among FBS programs last year for offense (33.2 points per game), 48th for total offense (410.3 yards per game), 47th for rushing offense (177.9) and 66th in the passing offense (232.4).

Streeter worked at Clemson with well-known quarterbacks such as Deshaun Watson, Trevor Lawrence, Charlie Whitehurst and DJ Uiagalelei, the latter of whom was a valued recruit who struggled at times.

Clemson went to the Orange Bowl with freshman Cade Klubnik after Uiagalelei entered the transfer portal, and he completed 30 of 54 passes for 320 yards and two interceptions and rushed 20 times for 51 yards and a touchdown in his first career start.

Clemson has reportedly focused on Riley and will try to poach him from college football playoff finalists TCU.

Riley, the 33-year-old brother of Southern California coach Lincoln Riley, helped lead TCU (13-2) to their first playoff appearance in his first season with the school.

He joined the Horned Frogs with first-year head coach Sonny Dykes. TCU ranked 14th in the nation in yards per game with 6.69 and led the country in 22 games of at least 50 yards.

Riley was also the offensive coordinator at SMU under Dykes for two seasons.

The deal is reportedly still being finalized and will require approval from the school’s Board of Trustees.

The board’s remuneration committee had scheduled a meeting for Friday with a single item of action on the agenda: soccer assistant coaching contract with sporting director Graham Neff.

An official announcement can only be made after approval by the Board of Directors.
