According to the Telegraph, the Netherlands international has been eyed up as Ronaldo’s replacement and an offer is set to be made in the coming weeks.

United manager Ten Hag recently confirmed: “Yes, we want to sign a striker in January, but only if we find the right player. We will do everything in our power.’

Gakpo has been on United’s shortlist since the summer – when Ten Hag arrived at the club – but was unconvinced to act at the time.

Instead, Old Trafford bosses opted to sign Brazilian winger Antony from Ajax, keeping Gakpo as a back-up option should that transfer fall through.

But after impressing with three goals in five games at the World Cup, they are now ready to make an official request to sign the striker.

Ten Hag feels an additional attacking option is needed, with Gakpo being primarily a left winger for PSV but also a center forward for his country.

He had been pursued by Leeds United and Southampton over the summer but remained uninterested in a move to either club, sticking to another transfer instead.

Gakpo has since scored 13 goals and contributed 17 assists in all competitions for PSV, in addition to his insistent campaign for Holland.

However, the Red Devils could also face competition from Newcastle and Real Madrid to sign the in-form man.

Alongside Gakpo, United are said to be interested in signing Benfica’s Portuguese striker Goncalo Ramos.

ESPN report that United will be making an inquiry about Ramos’ availability during the January transfer window, although budget constraints could make it difficult to finalize the signing as soon as possible.

It would be the second time Ramos has replaced Cristiano Ronaldo after stepping in for the Portuguese captain in the knockout stages of the World Cup.
