A young couple was miraculously rescued by a fisherman after being lost at sea for three days.

Lorne Benussi, from the coastal Queensland town of Yeppoon, was on a fishing trip with his father when he came across the distraught couple.

He had anchored his boat at Yellow Patch on Curtis Island and went to sleep Monday night before hearing voices outside calling for help.

“We turned on all the lights and saw a young couple float by in the tide… they just trod water; They didn’t have a board or anything,” he told the ABC.

Mr Benussi said the pair were “bug-ridden” and “barely kept their heads above water”.

The former professional fisherman pulled the couple on board.

The couple had drifted off North West Island, about 75 kilometers north-east of Gladstone.

They had set up camp on the island on Saturday but were caught in the tide after swimming out on their paddleboards.

After they were rescued, Mr. Benussi gave them food, water and clean clothes. They also took hot showers.

There’s more to come.
