Cowboys place kicker Brett Maher botches a trio of PATs in the first half in a wild card matchup with the Bucs

beat three? Cowboys place kicker Brett Maher botches a trio of first-half PATs in wildcard matchup with the Bucs when Peyton Manning asks ‘can you cut a guy midway through a playoff game?’

Dallas Cowboys field kicker Brett Maher timed a bad time for a fall from Yips in Tampa Monday night.

The 33-year-old Nebraska player, who faced the Buccaneers in the final playoff game of the wild card round, blew three extra points in the first half. Prior to Monday, no placekicker had ever missed three PATs in a single playoff game, let alone a single game half.

The good news for Dallas fans is the Cowboys were still leading the game 18-0 at halftime, but that was little consolation for the struggling kicker, who was visibly upset at Raymond James Stadium on Monday.

The sequence of missed kicks prompted ESPN commentator Peyton Manning to ask, “Can you cut a guy at halftime in a playoff game?”

Fans were adamant on Twitter after his third miss.

“Bret (sic) Maher probably has huge gambling debts,” one Twitter user joked, reviving an old saying about inaccurate kickers.

‘Did Maher’s foot break or what?’ asked another fan.

Another fan took a more somber tone: “Brett Maher is the first kicker to miss 3 PATs and also get to keep his leg.”

A former Nebraska kicker, Maher transitioned from the NFL practice rosters to the CFL before finally getting his start with the Cowboys in 2018.

Despite his accuracy issues over the years, he has a strong leg. In fact, on November 20, Maher became the first kicker in NFL history to score four field goals of 60 yards or more in his career.
