“Who knew cannibalism was so popular?” Dakota Johnson shocks audiences as she jokes about Armie Hammer’s scandal at Sundance

Dakota Johnson joked about the Armie Hammer cannibalism scandal while speaking at a dinner to kick off the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.

The 33-year-old actress presented the Luca Guadagnino Sundance Institute International Icon Award at the A Taste of Sundance Dinner at The Basin Recreation Fieldhouse after working with him on films such as A Bigger Splash and Suspiria.

Johnson – who rose to viral notoriety for an awkward exchange with Ellen DeGeneres in 2019 – joked that the acclaimed director tried to cast her as Peach in the acclaimed film Call Me by Your Name.

In the film, the character played by Timothee Chalamet performed a sex act on a peach, after which Hammer’s character ate it.

“Here at Sundance in 2017, viewers experienced a film that uniquely featured Luca’s iconic approach to storytelling,” said the actress, who plays Anastasia Steele in the Fifty Shades films.

She continued, “The vision and style of this is Call Me By Your Name. Unfortunately I wasn’t there. It was unfortunate.

“Luca had asked me to play the part of the peach but our schedules were at odds – thank goodness because then I would have been just another woman trying to eat Armie Hammer!”

Hammer received the biggest critical acclaim of his career for the 2017 film Call Me By Your Name – when he was nominated for a Golden Globe and Film Independent Spirit Award, among others – for his role as Oliver in the film opposite Timothée Chalamet .

The actor, who has also appeared in films such as ‘The Social Network’, ‘The Man from UNCLE’ and ‘The Lone Ranger’, was the subject of controversy in early 2021 over multiple allegations of sexual abuse and a stated penchant for cannibalism.

He was subsequently dropped from his agency, WME, and lost a number of roles he had vacancies, including the Jennifer Lopez film Shotgun Wedding and the Paramount Plus series The Offer.

Hammer has denied all allegations, and his attorney has claimed that all interactions were “entirely consensual, discussed and agreed in advance, and mutually participatory.”
