Damar Hamlin: NFL and MLB legend Bo Jackson sends message to Bill’s safety

NFL and MLB legend Bo Jackson tells hospitalized Damar Hamlin, “Damn, yes, we won, young man,” after the Bills player asked if his team was victorious three days after his cardiac arrest

NFL and baseball legend Bo Jackson texted Damar Hamlin and told him “we won” after Bills security at the hospital was asked if his team triumphed Monday night.

The 24-year-old has shown signs of encouragement in his progress over the past few days after suffering a cardiac arrest and CPR in the first quarter of Monday Night Football’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The football world has come together after the terrifying moment and Jackson, who played for the Las Vegas Raiders between 1987 and 1990, responded to Hamlin’s question three days after his collapse.

“Dear @HamlinIsland, the question you asked, ‘Did we win?’ The answer to that is yes, we won,” the 1990 pro-bowler wrote on his Twitter profile.

“The second you opened your eyes, the nation celebrated and cheered. To answer your question, damn yes we won young man!

Doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center said Hamlin made “significant improvements” Thursday.

“He’s starting to wake up and it appears his neurological status and function are intact,” said Dr. Timothy Pritts of UC College of Medicine in a video press conference.

Hamlin had been sedated after being resuscitated at the scene on Monday but began communicating with doctors in writing on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old defender even asked doctors who won Monday’s game, which was canceled on Thursday.

“Our response was, Damar, you won,” Pritts told reporters. ‘You won the game of life.’

On Friday, Hamlin’s breathing tube was removed and Buffalo team coach Sean McDermott also revealed the player had spoken to the team by saying “love you guys” over a FaceTime call on Friday and flexing his arm muscles for his surprised teammates from Bills strained.

The NFL will be supporting Hamlin this weekend, with all 32 teams able to offer a moment of support before the game, wearing t-shirts with Hamlin’s name and number on them, while the number three on the fields will be painted in Bill’s colors can.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell wrote a letter to football fans Saturday morning following Hamlin’s “inspirational progress.”

NFL LETTER COMPLETE

To our fans:

Damar Hamlin’s inspirational advances over the past few days have lifted the spirits of NFL and football fans across the country.

While his recovery is just beginning, we would like to thank the NFL medical staff and medical workers from both teams whose emergency response most likely saved his life. We are also grateful to the professionals at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center who cared for Damar and continue to oversee his care.

Seeing the entire NFL family—teams, players, coaches, and fans like you—together was another reminder that football is family: human, loving, and resilient.

This weekend, players and coaches from all 32 teams will wear Love for Damar 3 t-shirts during pre-game warm-ups to show support for Damar league-wide.

I’m deeply hopeful that with his continued progress, Damar has a good chance of observing his teammates. We are grateful and humbled to all who have played a part as he continues on his road to recovery.

Thank you on behalf of the entire NFL.

Roger Goodell
