Damar Hamlin’s breathing tube was removed in the latest sign of improving Buffalo Bills safety after he was revived Monday night from his on-field cardiac arrest in Cincinnati.
Hamlin began communicating with doctors in writing on Wednesday but had been prevented from speaking due to his breathing tube. After that was removed, the 24-year-old has started speaking to teammates in Orchard Park, New York, from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
“According to doctors at UCMC, Damar’s breathing tube was removed overnight,” the team said in a statement on Friday. “He continues to make remarkable progress in his recovery. His neurological function remains intact and he has been able to communicate with his family and care team.’
The team went on to say that they have been in touch with teammates: “Damar Hamlin FaceTimed our team meeting today to speak to players and coaches. What he said to the team: “Love you guys.”

Damar Hamlin’s breathing tube was removed in the latest sign of improving Buffalo Bills’ safety after he was revived Monday night after suffering cardiac arrest on the field in Cincinnati

Hamlin began communicating with doctors in writing on Wednesday but had been prevented from speaking due to his breathing tube. After that was removed, the 24-year-old has started speaking to teammates at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, reports The Athletic’s Shams Charania
The Bills update followed an earlier report by The Athlete’s Shams Charania.
“A blessing,” Charania’s tweet began. “The breathing tube is out of Damar Hamlin as of this morning and he has started speaking to Buffalo Bills teammates again. Hamlin has had a breathing tube in his body through his neck since Monday night but he no longer needs it and is able to breathe fully himself.
On Thursday, doctors said Hamlin had made “significant improvements.”
“He’s starting to wake up and it appears his neurological status and function are intact,” said Dr. Timothy Pritts of UC College of Medicine in a video press conference.
Hamlin had been sedated after being resuscitated at the scene on Monday but began communicating with doctors in writing on Wednesday.
He even asked doctors who won Monday’s game, which was postponed and later canceled after collapsing in the first quarter.
“Our response was, Damar, you won,” Pritts told reporters. ‘You won the game of life.’
Both Pritts and Dr. William Knight of the University of Cincinnati said the medics’ quick response to Hamlin’s collapse on Monday was critical to saving the Pittsburgh’s life.
Doctors were at Hamlin’s side within a minute of his collapse and immediately determined he had no pulse.
“There are injuries that happen in sport, but it’s rare for anything to happen [that] incredibly serious [that quickly]’ Pritts said. “We can’t take credit [the Bills medical] team enough.’
“It’s been a long and difficult journey over the past three days,” Knight said. ‘[Hamlin] has made quite a remarkable improvement.’
Knight said Thursday he had no idea when Hamlin’s breathing tube would be removed.
“Every patient is different,” Knight told reporters. “When the families of the patients ask how long they are being ventilated in the intensive care unit, [we’ll say]as long as it takes.’
The public learned the answer on Friday when Hamlin’s breathing tube was removed.
