Damar Hamlin’s GoFundMe Toy Drive hits $7 million with nearly 220,000 donations

Damar Hamlin’s GoFundMe hit a staggering $7 million in the early hours of Thursday as donations continued in large numbers following his cardiac arrest playing for the Buffalo Bills Monday night.

Hamlin, 24, made “progress” in intensive care on Wednesday, according to friend and family representative Jordon Rooney.

He collapsed on the field in the first quarter of Monday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals shortly after attacking Dee Higgins and had to be resuscitated on the field.

Immediately after Monday’s shocking scenes, a December 2020 GoFundMe Hamlin resurfaced, outlining his plan to raise $2,500 to buy toys for underprivileged children for the holidays amid the pandemic.

Generous donations have poured in, from fans watching on TV to football’s great and good. A total of almost 219,000 donations were made when the $7 million mark was reached.

Jim Irsay, chairman and owner of the Indianapolis Colts, has donated $25,003 – the highest combined donation as of this writing. The extra three dollars is Hamlin’s number.

Robert Kraft and the New England Patriots donated $18,003, Russell and Ciara Wilson donated $10,000, as did Tom Brady.

Other notable names such as the Washington Commanders, Bucs receiver Mike Evans, and Davnte and Devanne Adams have donated $5,000.

Launching the page in December, Hamlin wrote, “As I embark on my journey into the NFL, I will never forget where I came from and I am committed to using my platform to serve the community that raised me to influence positively. I created the Chasing M’s Foundation as a vehicle to enable me to make that impact and the first program is the 2020 Community Toy Drive.

“This campaign gives you the opportunity to contribute to our first initiative and make a positive impact on children hardest hit by the pandemic. 100% of the donations collected go towards buying toys for children in need.

“The time to act is now as we will be distributing toys from Kelly and Nina’s Daycare Center at 800 Russellwood Ave., McKees Rocks, PA 15136 on December 22nd from 3:30pm to 5:30pm.

“If you are unable to make a financial contribution, you can support this initiative in other ways. We accept donated toys at the daycare or just spread the word by sharing this fundraiser on your social channels.

“Thank you for supporting me on and off the pitch. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to work with you to make the holiday season a little brighter for the children in our community.’

Speaking on the site as $6 million was raised, Hamlin’s team said: “We are just overwhelmed by the support and generosity that we have seen over the last two days.

“With over $6 million raised, this fundraiser has become an overnight reminder of the incredible nature of humankind. Their actions directly reflect the type of person that Damar himself is.

“Representing Damar, the Jaster Athletes team has released the fundraiser updates and will be working with the Hamlin family, Chasing M’s Foundation and the GoFundMe team to ensure the safe delivery of funds. As the situation evolves, we will continue to share any fundraiser updates.

“We will also be working with GoFundMe to email all donors with further details on how the funds will be used once those details are available.

“As you can imagine, this has been a challenging time for the family. We appreciate your understanding as we give them the time and space they need to focus on Damar’s health first.

“We are hopeful for Damar’s future commitment to paying out the incredibly generous contributions. Thank you again for your support and we look forward to keeping you updated along the way.’
