‘Dangerous’ new TikTok trend sees people smearing lip balm on their EYELIDS to get ‘high’

Doctors are warning of a dangerous new TikTok trend in which people put lip balm on their eyelids to “get high” or complete a late-night study session.

First launched in the 2010s, “Beezin” involves people putting Burt’s Bees lip balm around their eyes to mimic and intensify the feeling of being high or drunk and make them more alert.

While the trend was short-lived over the past decade, it has seen a renaissance in recent months after videos on TikTok racked up millions of views.

Doctors warned that promoting the idea is “dangerous” because it could cause skin conditions like eyelid dermatitis and possible infections.

A Burt’s Bees rep told Fox News Digital that while the product is 100 percent natural, “that doesn’t mean it can get on your eyes.”

Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm, whose classic flavor contains peppermint, can leave lips feeling cold and tingly. The same effect can be felt when applied to the eyelids as the peppermint oil induces a burning sensation that makes people’s eyes awake.

Videos show people rubbing the lip balm around their eyes and then passing it on to their friends.

But cosmetics scientist Carly Musleh warned of the trend on TikTok.

She said: “The skin around the eyes is very sensitive, something like that could cause contact dermatitis.

“But not only that, if you use something on your lips and eyes and share it with other people, it can transmit bacteria and spread infection.”

Eyelid dermatitis is a common condition that causes the skin on or around the eyelid to become dry, itchy, and sore.

A Burt’s Bees rep told Fox News Digital that while the product is 100 percent natural, “that doesn’t mean it can get on your eyes.”

They said: “Burt’s Bees tests all of its products, including the Beeswax Lip Balm, to ensure they are safe for their intended use. We recommend using our products as directed.’

Optometry Times editorial board member Milton Hom said the trend could lead to “a full-fledged inflammatory response that requires treatment.”

Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm contains ingredients like peppermint oil.

The brand’s Medicated Moisturizing Lip Balm also contains menthol.

Both substances have a cooling effect when used, which can also make people feel more awake.

Ms. Musleh said the effects come on faster because the skin on the eyelid is thinner.
