Danielle Laidley is stepping out in Melbourne with her childhood sweetheart Donna Leckie

Danielle Laidley stepped out with her childhood sweetheart Donna Leckie in Melbourne on Wednesday.

The former AFL great, 55, and Donna were seen walking towards a waiting car ahead of an interview for the release of Dani’s new book Don’t Look Away: A Memoir of Identity & Acceptance.

With black pants, a matching shirt and a white fur vest, Dani made a style statement at the outing.

She completed her ensemble with black mules and walked close to Donna before sitting down.

The couple, who had been childhood partners in both elementary and high school, reunited in 2017 and rekindled their romance last year.

The sighting comes after Danielle recently spoke for the first time about the devastating moment when she found out Victoria Police officers had leaked photos that drew public attention to her transition to being a woman.

Laidley was arrested in 2020 for stalking and violating a domestic violence order, resulting in an 18-month bond of good behavior with no conviction or fine.

The officers who took her into custody leaked a photo of her in a wig and makeup on social media, and it soon went viral.

Laidley said she found the entire court process “consistently difficult” and slammed the cops who leaked the photos.

“The photos were an invasion of privacy,” she told 60 Minutes.

The Victoria Police Internal Disciplinary Committee ordered 11 officers ranging in rank from constable to sergeant to pay Laidley up to $3,000 out of their own pocket.

Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton formally apologized to Laidley after the photos went viral and said he was “appalled” by the officer’s behaviour.

Born Dean James Laidey, Laidley played 151 AFL games for the West Coast Eagles and North Melbourne before beginning a 149-game coaching career with the Kangaroos.

While Laidley only received a formal diagnosis of gender dysphoria five years ago and only in 2020, when the transition process began, Laidley has carried this around for a long time.

“My first memory is about six years ago, way, way back,” Laidley told Triple M in June.

“Now I’m 55, so what is it, 49 years, God.

“It was really difficult knowing that I felt so different on the inside than on the outside, and then since I started playing football in high school, to have this persona, and some called me the Junkyard Dog at the time, that was it away from who I really was and that was very difficult and taking its toll.

‘I felt like I’d walked around with a boat anchor on my head for many, many years, but I was too scared, ashamed, embarrassed to find out, but I knew there was something different about my feelings.’
