David Beckham ‘frustrated Qatar World Cup organizers’ in his $150m ambassador role

REVEALED: David Beckham ‘frustrated the organizers of the World Cup in Qatar by refusing to speak to the media in his $150M ambassadorial role’ – amid heavy criticism for promoting the country over its human rights record

The day will come when David Beckham will be asked why he took $150m to become the Qatar World Cup ambassador, but if the former England captain has his way, it won’t be anytime soon.

Beckham was a highly visible presence throughout the tournament in Qatar, being pictured in stadiums to watch a number of games while his image was featured on billboards across the country.

But Beckham has yet to come out and talk about his decision to join a country where migrant workers died building new World Cup stadiums and where homosexuality is banned.

According to the New York Times, Beckham’s silence has left the World Cup hosts frustrated.

The Times describes a number of reported incidents during the World Cup in which Beckham appears to have sought to minimize publicity about his involvement in promotional events in Qatar.

It is also claimed that Beckham “denied” a chance to discuss his deal with Qatar while filming an episode of “The Overlap” – a YouTube show hosted in June by his former Manchester United team-mate and England, Gary Neville, was moderated.

Additionally, there are claims that other former players who are Qatar ambassadors were frustrated with Beckham’s influence and claim he was given special treatment.

Beckham, 47, is believed to be paid $150m for his entire role as ambassador to Qatar, including $10m for his work surrounding the World Cup.

Beckham was widely criticized in Britain for his involvement in the Qatar World Cup, with comedian Joe Lycett apparently smashing £10,000 ($12,000) as a stunt to pressure Beckham into ending his deal with Qatar.

Australian football hero Craig Foster, who worked as a human rights ambassador for Amnesty in the afterlife, said Beckham’s reputation had been damaged beyond repair.

“What we envision David Beckham has been damaged beyond repair,” Foster told Australia’s Channel 10. “He was seen as a gay icon and that became part of his brand and now the LGBTIQ community around the world feels too Quite like that was just part of his branding and it wasn’t authentic.

“Now to be able to promote Qatar and say outwardly that it’s a fantastic place without mentioning the criminalization and oppression of the LBGTIQ community is clearly at odds with all the pronouncements he’s made has done in the last 20 years.”

The Times quoted a spokesman for Beckham as saying: “David has been involved in a number of World Cups and other major international tournaments, both as a player and as an ambassador, and he has always believed in the sport having the power, a power for that to be good the world.

“We understand that there are different and strongly held views on engagement in the Middle East, but welcome that the debate on the key issues was directly stimulated by the first World Cup in the region.

“We hope that these conversations will lead to greater understanding and empathy for all people and that progress will be made.”
