Formula 1 legend David Coulthard has warned Sergio Perez that if he ever “falls ill”, Australian reserve driver Daniel Ricciardo will take his job at Red Bull.

In 2022, Max Verstappen won the Drivers’ Championship, with team-mate Perez third with two race wins – although the relationship between the two was strained at times.

Ricciardo has now assumed the reserve role at his former team and Coulthard believes Perez needs to make some improvements to retain his place as Verstappen’s right-hand man.

‘Keep a close eye on him [Ricciardo’s] Health and fitness,” Coulthard told PlanetF1.com.

“Don’t drag a cripple anywhere. When I was at the McLaren, I spent nine years there and did every test and didn’t miss a race, even if I felt awful, even if I got out of the car and felt sick.

“Because I knew that the moment I let the test driver in, he had an opportunity to show how good he was. So I didn’t let him get in the car. He could talk all day, but he couldn’t set a lap time. So you have to defend your territory.

“It’s the old Jerry Maguire line — that’s not show friends, it’s show business.”

Ricciardo is returning to where his F1 career began and he recently revealed he was suffering from burnout and was “glad” that no one had offered him a spot on the 2023 grid.

The 33-year-old’s career reached a crossroads after stuttering performances at McLaren and Renault previously before his original team Red Bull came to the rescue.

Ricciardo will take up a reserve driver position with the manufacturer, sharing the role with young Kiwi star Liam Lawson while doing promotional work for Red Bull.

It came after the Australian turned down potential opportunities to drive with lower-tier teams like Haas, Williams and Alfa Romeo, while he has also been linked with starting positions at Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari.

Ricciardo’s move drew criticism from many in the F1 paddock, including former champion Jenson Button, who believed the Australian was taking a huge risk with his future.
