The re-imagining of the fan-favorite Age of Empires II, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is coming soon to Xbox. Here’s what you need to know about publishing to the Microsoft console.
The original Age of Empires II was released in 1999 and is considered a classic RTS game. The historical RTS is one of the hallmarks of the genre alongside Starcraft and has spawned memes for decades, most notably the “Wololo” sound effect of the priest unit reversing the allegiance of the allied troops.
According to the game’s Xbox page, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition will be released on January 31, 2023 on Xbox. The game will come with its own enhancements that will optimize gameplay with a controller, although the site also states the console version of the game. The game will also be compatible with keyboard and mouse controls if a player opts for a more traditional gaming experience.
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition remasters the original game with graphical improvements, quality of life features, and new content, including new civilizations to play with. While the game features well-known empires like the British and Aztecs, it also features civilizations usually ignored by historical games like the Tatars and Gurjaras, which offer a unique gameplay experience.
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition was originally released for PC in 2019 as part of the celebrations of the original game’s 20th anniversary.
