DeSantis will fire FBI chief Christoper Wray if the president-elect criticizes the Justice Department for indicting Trump

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday night criticized the indictment against rival Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, saying there was a double standard in bringing the charges.

DeSantis also vowed to fire FBI Director Christoper Wray as one of his first acts as president if he were elected, implying that if Trump had been charged with crimes, Hillary Clinton would have been charged as well.

“In me, you know, you have a new FBI director from day one. We will clear out all of these agencies on day one. We will have a general overhaul done.

“I think there has to be a unified standard of justice in this country,” DeSantis said while addressing a party convention in Greensboro, North Carolina.

He condemned what he called “arming” government agencies, but was careful not to mention Trump by name in his speech.

Wray was nominated for the position by former President Donald Trump in 2017, but has faced criticism from Republican lawmakers for being overly political during his tenure.

“Hillary had the emails,” DeSantis said. “Is there any other standard for a Democratic secretary of state than for a former Republican president?”

Hillary Clinton, who was Secretary of State under President Barack Obama, lost to Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

During the campaign, she was faced with questions about her handling of confidential material after it was revealed that she had used a private email server at her home for some of her correspondence.

A State Department investigation found no evidence of willful misuse of confidential information by Department officials, and the FBI said Clinton was “careless” but did not recommend a criminal charge.

The rift between the GOP and FBI Director Wray first emerged during the Russia probe into then-President Trump and only deepened in the wake of the FBI’s wide-ranging criminal investigation into the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, which some Republicans consider exaggerated watch eagerly and politicized.

Addressing Trump’s new criminal charges, DeSantis hinted that he believes they were politically motivated alerts, with few bureaucrats in Washington who have little accountability and abuse their power.

Earlier in the day, prosecutors quashed a 37-count indictment against Trump accusing the former president of compromising some of the country’s most sensitive security secrets after he left office in 2021.

According to released federal court documents, Trump faces charges of unauthorized safekeeping of classified documents and conspiracy to obstruct justice.

Republicans have claimed the investigation into Trump, who is running to unseat Democratic President Joe Biden from the White House in 2024, is politically biased.

Biden and senior officials have repeatedly said the Justice Department is acting independently.

“There has to be a single standard of justice in this country.” “Let’s force it on everyone and make sure we all know the rules,” DeSantis said.

“There can’t be any faction of society using the power of the state as a weapon against factions it doesn’t like.” And we’ve seen that,” said DeSantis, who is a long way behind Trump in opinion polls for the Republican nomination .

Trump’s latest indictment theoretically allows DeSantis to voice criticism that the runaway frontrunner is unfit for office.

But he risks angering Trump’s loyal base, whose support has only grown more passionate since the Manhattan indictment.

As a result, many rivals have sided with Trump, perhaps hoping to keep their powder dry until he is eventually sidelined by more indictments expected in the coming months.

Trump is under investigation for his role in the January 6, 2021 US Capitol riot. Media reports suggest the racketeering and conspiracy charges in Georgia will be dropped in August over the tycoon’s campaign to overturn the election there.

DeSantism, who trails Trump by a wide margin in polls, has kept a low profile in his comments on his rival’s legal troubles, but the rhetorical hand grenades being thrown between camps have become more aggressive in recent weeks.

In addition to DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence and former President Donald Trump will address delegates later Saturday at the state convention in Greensboro.
