Douglas Luiz’s future at Aston Villa is a ‘sensitive situation’, says Steven Gerrard

Douglas Luiz’s future at Aston Villa is a “thorny situation” with the Brazilian out of contract next summer, Steven Gerrard concedes… with no progress on a new deal for the Brazilian as Arsenal show interest

  • Steven Gerrard admits interest in Douglas Luiz doesn’t surprise him
  • The Brazilian was the subject of an ultimately failed interest from Arsenal on deadline day
  • But the 24-year-old has now entered his final year of contract at Villa Park

Steven Gerrard expects speculation about Douglas Luiz’s future to continue throughout the season – but concedes it’s a ‘sensitive situation’ given the Brazilian is out of contract next summer.

The Villa manager is aware his star midfielder is in high demand – Arsenal were unable to sign him on deadline day – and admits interest in his services comes as no surprise after several strong performances earlier in the season.

Luiz’s dominant performances in his 118 games since joining Villa have turned heads for a number of clubs, including Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, who turned down a late offer for the 24-year-old.

Gerrard said: “Am I surprised by the speculation? No, because we have a young Brazilian who is a fantastic talent.

“I expect that question will be asked a lot as the season progresses. We want him to stay here. I think the owners were very strong in keeping him here.

“We didn’t want to lose him on the last day and he’s performed very well since then.”

Luiz has become a key player for Gerrard’s Villa, anchoring midfield and providing vital cover for a back three that has come under fire with increasing frequency this season.

Gerrard has praised the way the 24-year-old has done his job since a move to the Gunners was thwarted.

However, with his contract due to expire in June 2023, it can only be worrying that the club have so far made little progress in securing a longer deal after the Brazilian was turned away in the summer.

Gerrard said of the situation in the summer: “We’re not in a position where we have to lose our top players, but at the same time he still has a year to go. It’s one of those tricky situations where the club has to do what’s best for the club, not necessarily what’s best for me.”

However, Gerrard will likely need to prevent a re-approach early in the January transfer window as the Gunners are expected to strengthen their midfield.

Thomas Partey’s consistency is believed to have become a point of frustration for Arteta after picking up another injury on international duty with Ghana.

After a £20million bid was rejected in the summer, Luiz’s price will have fallen to an even cheaper price in January when the club are set to face the unwelcome prospect of potentially losing him for nothing in the summer.
