Drug addicts were “stunned” when they said Prince Harry, 17, confessed to taking cocaine, ketamine, cannabis and Nepalese hashish temple balls during the visit to the rehabilitation centre

  • A former resident, Paul Smith, yesterday claimed the prince is ‘so outspoken’
  • Harry left her amused as he said he had taken potentially harmful temple balls
  • In his explosive book, he said taking drugs like cocaine doesn’t make him happy

Drug addicts were stunned when 17-year-old Prince Harry admitted to using cocaine, ketamine, cannabis and Nepalese hash temple balls, it was alleged yesterday.

He was sent to meet residents at a rehabilitation center when Prince Charles discovered he had been experimenting with cannabis and alcohol.

But while at Featherstone Lodge in south-east London, Harry apparently confessed to much more serious drug use, telling terrified addicts he had used Class A cocaine and Class B ketamine, a tranquilizer.

A former resident, Paul Smith, claimed yesterday: “Harry was so open. He said he took ketamine, cannabis and also cocaine. We were stunned. There were reports of bad behavior at the time, but it was so shocking. That was a prince. It was amazing.’

Harry also left her amused when he spoke of taking temple balls, a particularly potent and potentially dangerous form of cannabis that has been cultivated in Nepal for hundreds of years.

Mr Smith, 54, shared his memories from 2002 after the Duke of Sussex wrote in his memoir Spare about snorting cocaine and hallucinating on magic mushrooms after once believing a dustbin was talking to him.

Mr Smith told The Sun yesterday: “We had no advance warning, we were just told he was on his way. He said when he did these things he was out of control. It was brutally honest. I think he was happy to speak near us.’

He recalled that Harry had spent about an hour with him and two other addicts, talking about his life in great detail. He said: “I think Charles wanted him to be alone and talk to real addicts about how bad drugs are. He didn’t even have his security guards in the room at this point. I said my name is Paul and explained my situation. I told him he didn’t want to end up in a place like this.’

In the book, Harry said taking cocaine didn’t make him happy, but that he tried the Class A drug and other narcotics to escape the harsh realities of his life. He also suggested that taking psychedelics helped his mental health therapy.

He admits to smoking cannabis at Eton and said he also continued to smoke the drug when he lived in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace, adding that he tried to make sure the smoke didn’t get into the garden of his neighbor the Duke of Kent.

Harry brags about how he lied to palace officials when a newspaper claimed to have received a photo of him using cocaine in 2002. He boasted of dishonestly informing a senior courtier that he had never taken the drug, leading the palace to deny it to the journalist.
