Elvis star Shonka Dukureh dies aged 44 from ‘natural’ causes of ‘cardiovascular disease’

The cause of death of singer Shonka Dukureh, who died last month at the age of 44, has been released.

Dukureh, who appeared in Baz Luhrmann’s hit Elvis biopic, died of “natural causes,” according to a coroner’s report obtained by Us Weekly on Monday.

The coroner noted in the report that her death was caused by “hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.”

The report said the performer was “found unresponsive in bed by her underage son… [who] ran to neighbors for help, who then called 911.’

Hypertension refers to chronic high blood pressure which, if left untreated, can lead to heart failure.

Individuals suffering from atherosclerosis experience a buildup of plaque, composed primarily of fat and cholesterol, in the walls of their blood vessels. Blood clots caused by the narrowed vessels can lead to heart attacks and strokes.

Metro Nashville Police Department previously said there was no suspicion of foul play, although Dukureh’s cause of death is pending at the time.

She shared her home with her two children and a neighbor who was alerted by the child who found her and called 911 at 9:27 a.m. on July 21.

Thornton was the first to record Leiber and Stoller’s Hound Dog and the single was released in February 1953.

Three years later, Elvis Presley released a cover version that became a worldwide hit.

About the role, Dukureh told The Tennessean that she identified with Thornton, who was “really raw with what she was doing and very honest and truthful and [made] music as she felt it. And I can totally understand that.’

She continued, “I was very conscious and really intentionally wanting to make sure I respect her, respect her, respect her legacy, respect her spirit, respect everything she’s contributed to the music and understand what I can do.” it because she did it and laid that foundation.’

At the time of her death, Dukureh was working on her first full-length studio album, which she described as “a tribute to the blues music genre” to celebrate those wild, unsung, pioneering artists and musicians who were pioneering rock ‘n’ roll music paved revolution.’

In April, Australian filmmaker Luhrmann paid tribute to Dukureh, who stars in the biopic alongside Austin Butler as Elvis Presley and Tom Hanks as Col. Tom Parker.

Luhrmann, 59, shared pictures of the two together and wrote: “The entire cast and crew of @Elvismovie are so thrilled and proud of @iamShonkaDukureh who plays Big Mama Thornton in the movie for her performance on stage at Coachella with @DojaCat for her new song ‘Vegas’.’

Dukureh has recorded with and provided backing vocals for Nick Cave, Mike Farris, Jamie Lidell and the Royal Pharaohs, among others.

Her initial goal was to be a teacher, but later decided to pursue a career in performing arts.

She graduated from Fisk University with a bachelor’s degree in theater.

According to her website, she also has a master’s degree in education from Trevecca Nazarene University.
