Everton are “interested in signing former Real Madrid star Isco” on a free transfer after the midfielder’s potential move to Union Berlin fell through as the Toffees look to replace Anthony Gordon

  • Union Berlin could not lure the midfielder due to high contract demands

Everton are eyeing a potential transfer for former Real Madrid star Isco after his move to Union Berlin was scrapped.

The free agent, who has been without a club since leaving Sevilla in December, traveled to Germany to complete his move to the Bundesliga side on deadline day.

However, Union Berlin failed to lure the midfielder to the German capital as demands ‘contrary to the previous agreement’ prevented the move and therefore left him looking for a new club.

After the failure of his move to Berlin, Everton are now looking to bring in Isco as they look for ways to improve their squad despite the closing of the transfer window, according to Spanish newspaper Sport.

The Toffees, who have not signed anyone during the January transfer window, see the 30-year-old as well suited to replace Anthony Gordon, who has left for Newcastle for £40m plus £5m in add-ons.

It would be a major coup for Everton, currently 19th in the Premier League and level on points with bottom-placed Southampton, as Berlin were keen to sign him but couldn’t afford it.

A statement from Union Berlin on Tuesday said: “We wanted Isco in Berlin, but we have our limits.

“These were exceeded today – contrary to the previous agreement. The transfer will not take place.’

Isco and Sevilla agreed to terminate the Spaniard’s contract in December after the midfielder fell out of favor with head coach Jorge Sampaoli, who insisted he had ‘failed to live up to the club’s expectations’.

He has recorded just one goal and three assists in his 19 games for Sevilla since joining from Los Blancos last August.

Isco left Real Madrid on a free transfer last summer after expiring the remaining months of his long-term deal at the Bernabeu, where he had scored 53 goals in 353 games during his nine-year stint.

During his time at Los Blancos, Isco has won five Champions League titles, three LaLiga titles and four Club World Cups since arriving from Malaga in 2013.

Isco has also scored 12 goals in 38 appearances for Spain but has not played for the national team since 2019.
