Ex-BBC editor Aled Davies ‘disappeared’ during New Year’s Eve stroll

More than 400 people have joined the search to find a former BBC radio editor who disappeared while out walking on New Year’s Eve.

Aled Glynne Davies, 65, was last seen at his home in Cardiff, Wales, after a meal with his wife Afryl Davies.

The father of two went for a walk around 11.30pm and did not return home. His children say they probably didn’t take his regular medication with them and are therefore “vulnerable”.

The Davies family have demanded information on his whereabouts and said on Sunday his disappearance was “very atypical” for Aled.

After arriving home around 11.30pm, Aled went for a walk alone and has not been seen since. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a dark green coat, hat and glasses.

The former BBC worker is 6ft tall and has a curved spine, resulting in a hunchback posture and “shuffling when walking”.

“He tends to walk slowly. This could come in handy when watching CCTV,” she added.

Gwenllian also claimed her father “needed urgently medication”.

Aled was an editor at BBC Radio Cymru – the station’s Welsh-language radio service – from 1995 to 2006.

He is credited with successfully relaunching Radio Cymru and pioneering the station, which helped reach a new, younger audience.

Before joining Radio Cymru as an editor, Aled was the station’s news editor. He was also Senior Producer on the BBC’s television news service on S4C.

He also led the team that created the channel’s first-ever Welsh-language website, BBC Cymru’r Byd.

After leaving the BBC, Aled and Afryl, a former teacher, founded Goriad Cyfyngedig in 2007, which produces television and radio programmes.

The company also hosts conferences, workshops and courses relevant to the media industry.

Aled has also served as a radio and television judge for Bafta Cymru, the Wales Media Awards and the Celtic Media Festival.
