James Haskell shocked theater audiences with a risqué joke about 9/11 as he appeared in public for the first time since splitting from his wife Chloe Madeley.
Former England international James cracked the bad taste gag while appearing on a recording of the World Cup After Party: The Good, the Bad and The Rugby podcast with his former international teammates Mike Tindall and Alex Payne.
It was his first public appearance since he and Chloe announced their split after five years of marriage – after he was spotted getting friendly with another woman during a night out in London last month.
On Tuesday night he and his co-hosts performed to a packed house at the G Live Center in Guildford, Surrey – with James mentioning his failed relationship several times during the two-and-a-half-hour appearance.
During the first half of the show, the audience had laughed as he made fun of himself after a tire propeller fell near Mike and rolled toward the edge of the stage.
He joked: “Where there’s guilt there’s a demand… I’m going to need some money soon, let it f***ing fall on me.”

In another gag, he described going out with a “buddy who’s a lawyer, well, he wasn’t a buddy back then, but he is now.”
But it was his joke about the collapse of the Twin Towers, which killed nearly 3,000 people in 2001, that brought an audibly sharp gasp from the crowd.
James – who littered his performance with four-letter words – told a story about former England coach Andy Farrell, who urged players to be honest with him and staff about their methods at the team training center.
He said: “He went straight to Tom Wood, right, former player, and he collapsed like the Twin Towers…”
Then the audience gasped and someone shouted “Jesus!”
James said, “What? Too obscene? Damn, that was the 9/11 idiot, it’s time to get over it in 2023.’
As the audience turned uncomfortably in their seats, he continued, “I’m just kidding, kidding.”
Then he laughed nervously and added: “It’s all right. ‘Don’t worry, I’m not coming back to Guildford, it’s fine.’
His co-hosts covered their heads as he cracked the joke and then continued to tell the anecdote to the hushed crowd, with someone overhearing him telling a pal: “That was a bit exaggerated.”
Later, in another crude allusion, he described trying to grab former England coach Stuart Lancaster’s life jacket during a team-building whitewater exercise before the 2015 World Cup – where he sat on the bench.

James’ comments came after he appeared on the latest episode of her reality TV show and complained that Chloe never “dressed sloppily” for him
He stretched his hand forward towards the audience and said, “Look at this hand ladies and gentlemen, it is a claw finger at all angles, the only one who likes it is the woman who is used to it… “
His comments came after he appeared on the latest episode of her reality TV show and complained that Chloe never “dressed sloppily” for him.
As she got ready, Chloe mused, “I know it’s a date, but it’s also an active, competitive date, so I’m not going to dress like a girly girl like I ever do.”
This prompted James to scoff, “Why do you act like you ever really dress up?” You’re lying!
“You always sit on a date and ask yourself, ‘Does it bother you that I don’t wear makeup and never dress up?’ “It’s more the fact that you’re doing something and worrying about it!’
Chloe said: “I feel bad because…” but James chimed in and said: “But not bad enough to ever change it!” She continued: “In my head we’re leaving the house and I feel I’m comfortable and warm and that’s all I care about.”
“Then we get there and other girls, like Love Island-style girls, come in and I’m like, Oh shit, poor James.”
As James argued: “I never complain”, Chloe continued: “I dress a bit slutty but not girly.”
James then joked: “You always dress sloppily when I’m not around, which is even worse.”
The latest episode of the reality series ended with their daughter Bodhi’s first birthday party, which was also attended by the couple’s parents.
The scenes were filmed a month before Chloe and James split, with the couple making their split official with a joint statement last weekend.
The couple, who married in 2018, had fueled speculation about their relationship after the personal trainer appeared without her wedding ring while partying with friends – shortly after the former rugby player was seen meeting a mystery woman outside a London nightspot blonde chatted.
In a joint update on Instagram, they announced: “Chloe and I have mutually decided to separate at the end of September 2023.”
“We had no plans to release a statement at the time – especially not while the TV show was airing – but constant speculation about our marriage unfortunately forced us to do so.
“Beyond this statement, we will not speak publicly about this matter and ask for privacy at this time.”
“Our only focus now is our beautiful daughter. “We will continue to co-parent with nothing but love.”
Since the split, James has been spending time with Mike and his wife Zara at the Rugby World Cup in France.
