“Explosion” is heard in DC shaking the ground and compared to “earthquake” online

Mystery ‘explosion’ heard in DC shattering windows and doors, likened to ‘earthquake’ online: Department of Homeland Security says ‘there is no threat’

Dozens of people reported hearing a loud “explosion” in the Washington DC area that shook homes and sparked panic, but authorities didn’t say what caused the loud bang.

Around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, social media users reported hearing a massive “bang” around the city, which some said shook their homes.

This prompted a flurry of social media posts and speculation about the source, although none of this has been confirmed. Some suspected a sonic boom from a nearby military exercise, others suspected an earthquake.

Multiple authorities have received calls about the mysterious loud noise, which could be heard as far away as Virginia.

Police are said to be calling the Federal Aviation Administration and others for more information.

The Department of Homeland Security said there is no danger at this time, but no reason was given.
